[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
I was working in London in the spring of 1990, between the time the Berlin Wall was breached (Nov 1989) and when the two Germanies were unified (July 1990). Since I was in the neighborhood anyway ( :-) ), I took a long weekend and went over to Berlin to see what was happening. Also, my boss back in New York had told me that when - not if - I went to Berlin, he wanted a piece of the wall. Well, so did I, so I stood in front of the wall (on the western side) and watched as various workers chipped away at it. In this picture, some guy was using a hammer and chisel, but this was very time-consuming, as this was a "fourth-generation" wall made of concrete hardened with, among other things, asbestos. But he kept at it. (The splotches of blue in the photo are remnants of the graffiti that used to cover the western side of the wall.)

Technical: Kodachrome slide, digitized and sharpened.

Hi Daniel,
Technically, this photo is not good. But I don't care, because in fact the important is the historical document that it represents.
I have also a couple of photos about this theme.
Regards,
F

Hi Daniel,
An important event well documented by you. The shot is a little out of focus, but it doesn't bother me because of the significance it has.
Well done,
Shaeri

A novel shot indeed. The hands are a little out of focus but it's probably the movement. Not bad for a 17 year old slide.

I think you alrady know about the technical drawbacks of the image, but it is a wonderful image to have in your gallery to document this important and life-changing (for some) event. The asbestos dust flying around can't have been a good thing.

Hi Daniel,
A photo that makes me remember those day very well. I was in Berlin February 8th, 1990, and could walk through the holes in the wall! Naturally I bought some pieces (with graffiti) and I still have them. A great event!
Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Hello Daniel,
The unsharp hands/hammer are of no importance, it's the symbolism what counts and makes this photo valuable.
Tfs,
Henri
