Rudiment of the Eider-Canal near Rendsburg. The Eider-Canal was the first connection between the North and the Baltic Sea and it used stretches of the river Eider for the link between the two seas. The Eider-Canal was built in order to avoid using the dangerous passage around Skagen in Northern Denmark and was completed in 1784. It was 175 kilometre long, only 29 metres (32 yards)wide with a depth of three metres (3.25 yards), which limited the vessels that could use the canal. Between boats and huts you can see a towing path which allowed horses to tow a ship or a boat when sailing was impossible due to unfavourable winds.
In June 1881 Jules Verne and his brother Paul had been forced by a heavy storm on the North Sea to give up sailing from Hamburg to Copenhagen. But fortunately they managed to cruise with their damp yacht "Saint Michel" on the Eider-Canal and finally reached the Baltic Sea. They very much enjoyed this trip and published some very enthusiastic reports about the Canal and its beautiful surroundings. Today this idyllic place is not only a paradise for angler. When I am passing on my way home from work, I often go here for a walk which makes me feel better after a hard day in the office.

Hallo Harriet
Despite the white sky, this is a very nice view of the banks of the Canal.
I was very surprised to read your interesting note about the Eider-Canal. I didn't know that there was a Canal before the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (that one that every sailor calls Kiel Canal).
As a sailor I've crossed several times the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, years ago, but unfortunatelly that time there was no digital photography and I had no money for much photo...
Greetings from Portugal,
F

Bonjour Harriet,

Hi Harriet,
I like very much this sight of these boats aligned with the reflections of the trees which come to fit into the composition. The grey / green / blue tones are sweet and pleasant. The white sky is too present. I made a WS to propose another centring.
As I always say , it is my way of seeing the photo and you can like or not what I suggest, you remain a boss of your creation!

Not the best light, but the reflections are superb, wonderful rural scenery. I just watched the Austria match, congratulations and good luck against Portugal.

Hello Harriet,

You have achieved some lovely refections in the water which are very eye-catching.
I would have been tempted to crop the white sky. It doesn't really add to the theme or the shot.
The the title is perfect for the shot.
Interesting notes.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Harriet,
Stunningly peaceful reflection of these tiny vessesl the calm water of the canal. The three trees join the boat to make for a truly soothing view of this quiet place.
