St. Peter and Paul Church in Sehestedt high above the Kiel-Canal is of Romanesque date, built in the end of the 12th century. It is a typical fieldstone church, a type of church that arose mostly in areas where the ice ages have deposited glacial erratics. Therefore Schleswig-Holstein is one of the main areas with fieldstone churches in Europe.
There is a particular atmosphere about a church that has remained largely untouched for centuries, and here on TE one can find amazing examples especially in France. They are illustrations of human achievement in the service of something greater than us and they can even let the unbeliever's heart jump just a little.
On the other side one often sees restored buildings that verge on cuteness. The signs of reconstruction and preservation on the building of St. Peter and Paul are almost in a folkloristic manner too cute, too shining and too tidy.
Churches often have major significance as features in the rural landscape, particularly so for towers and spires. They give communities a sense of identity and locality and are often the most important built feature. Concerning the spire this is also the case in Sehestedt where people simply love their beautiful church.

Bonsoir Harriet
Pleine de charme cette petite église. S'il n'y avait pas le clocher je pencherais pour une école de campagne.
Merci pour le partage et bonne soirée.
Nicole

Hi Harriet,
Wonderful sharp details to the beautiful old stone work of this lovely church.
Good use of light bring soothing shadows to the foreground green that contrast so effectively with the pale blue sky.
Regards, Tom

Hallo Harriet,

eine schöne Kirche ansprechend präsentiert; schöne Aufteilung und natürliche Farben machen dieses Bild sehr interessant..

viele Grüße Bernd

Hi Harriet,
Quite original church which has mixture of bricks and natural stones. And the spire is again of different style, probably as a result of renovetions over centuries. I think you were just a bit early with this shot. A bit later sidelight would illuminate nicely that wall.
Kari

Hello Harriet,

A good POV which show the structur of the church, good composition and picture rich in details.

Hi HARRIET,
Excellent colours of the church against lovely blue sky.Very interesting perspective and well composed,
Georg

Hi Garriet .
Indeed a cosy church of "many colours" in texture and materials , but very harmonious !
The lighting is great and the colours are bright and natural !
very interesting note !
Have a nice weekend ,Harriet !
Kindest regards
Dorte.

Hello Harriet,

A bit unusual church architecture, and I'm surprised to see it was built as early as the 12th century, could be 700 years later as far as I'm concerned!
A fine point of view to show the details, a fine colour palette!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Harriet,

Hi Harriet. I have to say this photo reveals a very interesting story. From left to right modern brick wall merged into stone masonry and a spire that I am uncertain its made of. The details listed in the comments also are very interesting as well and very well written. I particularly like the comment about the unbelievers heart jumping a little from looking at the wonders of human achievement, Photography wise I am suggesting you either get yourself some sort of filter for the bright sky in shots like this, or use a tripod and expose one photo for the building and another for the sky and merge them later in post process. The camera sensor is usually challenged in capturing such a wide range of exposure when you have bright skies like this.
Thank you for sharing, nice work!

Hello Harriet,

You have captured very good details of the church's architecture and stonework.
Good, sharp images and well chosen pov.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Harriet.

So typical for this area, I think - ad a dane...
This is a warm, colorful and well-filled picture. Excellent - and a clever note, too...
God weekend.

Jan

Interesting subject. I have to admit I'd like to see you go back for a few more pictures of this structure. I'm very interested in the door and door frame area since it is so bright, and not very church like.

Excellent comment on churches. I come from the land of quick, cutesie and disposable (the Western US), and love European churches for exactly the reasons you've expressed here. Very well said.

Hi Harriet,
Nice church with good colors and composition. I like that fabulous sky and the little details of that church.
Good job!

Hi Harriet,
Original architecture for this church, well taken, good light, well presented.

Hi Harriet,

The trees an bushes are a nice frame to the church. The point of view is allowing ud to see the details and colors of the architecture of the building. The colors are nice and soft. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Bonjour Harriet,
un ciel un rien surexposé, c'est peut-être le petit truc qui empêche cette photo d'être parfaite. Des verts que j'aime beaucoup par contre.
J'aurai cadré en enlevant la potelet de bois de gauche aussi.
Regards.
Daniel.
