Photographer's Note

When I saw this, I started to laugh uncontrollably.

Everyone, it seems, smokes in Athens. And so there are plenty of advertisements for cigarettes.

Here in the states, advertising is almost always sexually suggestive with little or no attempt to pretend otherwise, but it's done very carefully so as not to draw negative reaction from common people. This country is full of people who would like to think we still live in the Victorian Era and everyone is easily offended by something or another.

This advertisement for cigarettes would NEVER succeed in the States. It is, perhaps, the single most blatantly sexual ad I have ever seen and the best part is--it's not even attractive; it's just ridiculous.

Note, of course, the stamp of "U.S.A." across the ad...

This was taken with a disposable camera set to "panoramic". I scanned the developed image, cropped it very slightly, unsharp mask worked the levels, gave it a frame...
