Photographer’s Note

Kastoria is a city in northern Greece in the periphery of West Macedonia. It is the capital of Kastoria Prefecture, located at 40°31′00″N, 21°16′00″E. The town's population is estimated as some 20,660 people (1991 census). It is situated on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Orestiada, in a valley surrounded by limestone mountains.

Name

There are many theories regarding the name Kastoria (in Greek: Καστοριά. It has been claimed that the name derives from the Greek word κάστορας/kástoras (beaver), who may have lived in the nearby lake (Lake Orestida). Other theories propose that the name derives from the Greek word κάστρο/kástro (castle; from the Latin word castrum) or from the mythical hero Κάστωρ/Kástor, who may have been honoured in the area. The name for the city in Slavic is Kostur/Костур (meaning skeleton, from kost, 'bone'), the Aromanian name is Kastoria and the Turkish name is Kesriye.

Η Καστοριά είναι πόλη της Ελλάδας που βρίσκεται στο δυτικό άκρο της Δυτικής Μακεδονίας. Ο ομώνυμος νομός που υπάγεται η πόλη της Καστοριάς συνορεύει βόρεια με το νομό Φλώρινας, νότια ανατολικά και νοτιοανατολικά με τους νομούς Γρεβενών και Κοζάνης, νοτιοδυτικά με το νομό Ιωαννίνων και δυτικά με την Αλβανία. Ο πληθυσμός της πόλης ανέρχεται περίπου στους 20.000 κατ. Είναι χτισμένη πάνω σε μία χερσόνησο στα δυτικά της λίμνης Ορεστίδος.

Καστοριά: Μοναχική και όμορφη, μοναδική και συναρπαστική, αυτάρεσκα καθισμένη στο θρόνο της, με την όψη της να καθρεφτίζεται στα ήρεμα νερά της λίμνης της, ντυμένη με τα βυζαντινά της ενδύματα, στολισμένη με τις τοιχογραφίες των ναών της, φερμένη από τα πανάρχαια χρόνια, τούτη η πόλη, η Καστοριά, αποτελεί σπάνιο ιστορικό μνημείο για όλη την Ελλάδα.

The compo is so well done!... Amazing! The elongated shapes of the promontory and the boat combine very well and then there are those shapes made with the light on the surface of the water that subtly give depth and make it even more interesting graphically. The light is also gorgeous.

Να φανταστείς ότι σήμερα την ώρα που πήγα να φωτογραφίσω στο ίδιο σημείο συνάντησα τυχαία τον Ηρακλή έπαθα πλάκα από την σύμπτωση!!!

This is a very atmospheric image with the low mist blurring the horizon. The little triangle of land with its reflection works well in the composition. The blue of the boat is quite startling against the muted, pastel background. Well done

The combination of light and pale sky are working well together and gives a special atmosphere to the scene. The well positioned motor boat adds a touch of color and stands out well against the sea. I also like the distortion of the clouds, reflecting in the water, in FG.

sometimes it just does not take much to capture beauty in its essence. A boat, water and some background.
