Photographer’s Note
Here you see the monastery of Anafonitria with its characteristic tower, situated in the area of Plemonariou in the northwest of the island Zakynthos.
It was probably established in the l5th century from Leonard Tokko, Count Palatine the 3rd of Cephalonia and Zakynthos, with his wife Lappa.
In byzantine times the miraculous icon of Our Virgin "Anafonitria" was brought here from the captured Constantinople in 1453.
The monastery became a brotherhood from the priest-monk J. Rosanos and the monk A. Vlahos in 1534.
From this time the great property was possessed by Venice as Jus patronato, to the people prominent. In 1568 it was given to Archbishop Dionysus Sigouros (the Saint and Protector of our island today). It was here that our Saint met the murderer of his brother to whom he forgave.
The last possessor of the monastery was the family of Flabouriaris.
All the wall paintings (all that were saved) were narrated possibly in early 1669 by the order of Morozini.
Currently the monastery operates as a Parish Church for the neighbour village that bears the same name. The tower exists as a steeple and the area is a place of pilgrimage, the reason for this being the binding of Our " Saint of Forgiveness " Dionysus.

This looks like a great place to explore, with some interesting looking buildings, especially that church tower; fantastic.
I think that bush gets in the way slightly, maybe if you had taken a couple of paces forward you could have avoided it and improved the composition.
Still, its an interesting shot.
Cheers,
Ben

Hallo Hans,
Groeten,
John

Mon cher ami Hans,
Comment pourrai-je ne pas aimer cette composition :
- Une magnifique église ;
- Le site merveilleux ;
- La composition très réussie ;

Mooi werk.
Goed weekend,
Bert

The more you look the more details you see; the pillars and the archway are not apparent on first viewing. Successful composition in my view with the greenery breaking up the yellow of the buildings.

Hej Hans,
Een mooie foto van deze plek, de compositie is prima en de lichtval vind ik ook mooi. Al het groen zorgt ervoor dat de gebouwen better uitkomen. Goed werk.
Groeten,
Lars

Hi Hans,
It sure looks a bit different from Amsterdam ;-)
Nice framing, it looks like you have caught architectural details from several eras as the columns I can see look much more ancient than the church. exposure is excellent considering the difficult shooting conditions in the late greek morning in june.
I wish you a nice week end,
Jean-Yves

Hi Hans,
A nicely composed image.With good contrasts in light and also in colour.The blandness of the stone and deep greens of nature go very well together.It looks like you had strong light to deal with and you did it very well.TFS.

Hi Hans.
This is an not so well-known side of Zakinthos you make us discover here. Far from the classic (but still beautiful) blue sea / white cliffs of Zante's coasts. Thanks for your very informative comments.
Regards.

Hi Hans
Interesting pov and a good capture of this monastery. The shrub to the left is a little intrusive and could have been avoided, but the picture overall, delivers some interesting details and the light is well controlled, despite looking quite bright. Good work.
