The castle of Palamidi lies on a high hill (216m. a.s.l.) to the east of Akronafplia in the town of Náfplio. It was first fortified by the Venetians during the second Venetian occupation of the area (1686-1715). It was an incredibly large project and was finished within a relatively short time (1711-1714).It is a typical baroque fortress, based on the plans of the engineers Giaxich and Lasalle. In 1715 it was captured by the Turks and remained under their control until 1822, when it was liberated by the Greeks.

In addition it is also the location of the prison of Kolokotronis. One of the bastions, the so-called "Miltiades" was used as the prison cell of Theodoros Kolokotronis, a hero of the Greek Revolution. The bastions themselves were originally named after the Greek Proveditori. However, when the Ottoman Empire came around, they captured the castle and town, the bastions were given Turkish names. Lastly, when the Greeks finally overthrew the Turks the bastions were given the names of Greek saints. Additionally, there are 857 stairs from the base of the fortress to the top. It is a trivia question Greeks like to spring on foreign tourists.

About the shot:
---------------
I was on leaving from Nafplio, when my girlfriend saw this outstanding view from the exterior mirror, and ask me to take a picture of it.
This photo is devoted to her.

I used her camera, since both of my CF cards were full making my Canon useless.
Beside the castle I wanted some more objects to fill my composition with. The star lights created by a narrow aperture (high f value) setting also the widest DOF, and cars movement from the street was excactly what I wanted, for I used 15 seconds exposure in Manual program.

Mostly f/8 is the maximum aperture value for compact cameras and minimum is f/2.8, while f/1.2 and f/32 or more are in dSLRs depending on lens.

f/8 in a compact camera is not the same and has nothing to do with f/8 in dSLR

1/2000 is the fastest shutter speed which is satisfying, while 15 seconds are the maximum light exposure for this camera which are not enough in many cases. More exposure values such as 30 seconds or BULB feature were far too easy to be included in this great camera. I can't figure why such features weren't included though :(

Hi Stelios!

Another great composition and sharp image. It's not really in the camera but the person wielding it to produce stunning photograph.
I hope you dont mind, how do you get that star effect on the lights?

Andrew

Hi Stelios,
I see your gallery is steadily and wonderfully growing. A lovely long exposure shot, the star-like effect of the lights are so cute, especially the biggest one as it improves and balances the composition.
Great result!
best regards

Hi Stelios,

frankly speaking for me it is not an outstanding photograph but indeed a very interesting one.

Thanks for the note, which helped to learn a lot about the technicalities of compact digi cam and dSLR.

But whats that illuminated circular object on the top?

regards,
Pinakie

Hi Stelios. Today I've discovered your photos on TE. By commenting this one I want to express you the pleasure I experienced by seeing all of them. Yours "about the shot" and "Post Processing Notes" are the best tutorials I ever read (If I don't learn from them, I'll give up :)). Thank you very much for that.
Musical suggestion for this one: End of the Night by The Doors. Paulo
