Looking at complex urban reflections challenges your view of the city and its normality. And looking closely at a picture that has these kind reflections in them (which I obviously did during the editing of this one) amplified that effect big time. I saw all kinds of urban details that I didn’t see while taking the shot, and saw other things that I did see but they popped up at strange and unexpected places. It kind of worked as a deconstruction of the reality as we normally see it and for a moment made me wonder again about the nature of it. We try to explain it in terms of causality and construct big and complex arrays of theoretical concepts to do so. But can this really be done? It made me ponder the ideas of the school of thought that stipulates that the order that we normally perceive and try to explain is only in our minds, as a reflection of the way we mentally function, and that through this it’s basically a construct . And that there’s really only chaos surrounding us. Photography sometimes manages to bridge the gap between perception and entropy.

I hope by the way that you didn’t mind that I got a bit philosophical on you today, I was unwinding for the weekend ;-) And have a great one!

Captured here is a shoe store window, in a shopping district in Athens at the base of the Lykavittos hill.

The PCS3 work flow: I cropped, altered the saturation, contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, using different layers, enhanced the edges, USM-ed, added a frame and resized and did a gentle USM (1,1px, 19%) again on a 75 % transparent layer.

Quite a lot going on here. Many nice repetitions and a fine play on the strong reds. I like the vertical stripping too.

Hi Bert,

Amazing reflections. Perhaps this is an not unusual street scene but when you capture it with your camera it is truly fascinating to look at. And I think it happens quite often that you discover a lot of interesting details in photo you did not see when you took it. TFS and have a nice week-end!

Cheers,

Ulf

Hallo Bert,

Groeten,
Lars

Complexity, graphism, style... Typical from you...
And you composed that perfectly, in a precise and pertinent frame.
Very well done.
Stéphane

hi Bert,
"urbanisation visually explained" is how I think about this photo. I'm fascinated by the almost-incomprehensible mixture of elements here, but the photo IS NOT chaotic, I guess the strong red elements help to keep everything together. the motion blurr, the multitude of layered reflections symbolising many lifes going on at the same time and place - all that is the essence of a city as far as I'm concerned. love this photo.

best,
Kristine

Hi Bert,

I do like all the various splashes of red in this composition! Also nice to see the various reflections, the static elements and the blurred movement in the foreground. A very creative composition it is!

Greetings,
Dennis

hallo there, bert

kristine showed me this pic a while ago. i was really impressed, but did not have time to write a comment then. an excellent, urban observation, my friend. almost looks like a collage, but i realize it is not. amazing juxtaposition of its-and-bits of urban existence and you have manage to squeeze it all into one short glimpse of the shutter. excellent! for some reason M.C. Escher comes to my mind, looking at your composition: there is no knowing what belongs really where and where it starts and ends... by the way clarity is superb while the presence of bright red makes the shot even more so attractive.

regards,
kristaps
