[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This is a view of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, a 30 km long canyon in the eponymous national park just north of the famous Dettifoss waterfall in northern Iceland.

It measures on average 100 metres in depth and 500 metres in width. Its name means "glacial river canyon" and for obvious reasons it is often referred to as Iceland's Grand Canyon. Jökulsárgljúfur National Park is situated in the north of Iceland around the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
The National Park is fascinating because of its chaotic canyon and volcanic mountains. 8000 years ago, a volcano erupted directly underneath the river. This caused powerful explosions due to the combination of fire, gas and water. The mountains around the river were blown up and only ruins left of them, mixed with lava formations.

One of the many things I left for my next trip to Iceland is a two-day (34 km) trek from Dettifoss along the canyon to Asbyrgi, a horseshoe-shaped canyon at the northern end of the park.

Hi John,

magnificent view! Landscape is marvelous and your image captures so many different textures, from rocks in front to greenery in a distance. Sky is dramatic as it is, so I learned, usual for Iceland. Chosen angle for capture is superb with a diagonal placement of the river. All in all superb shot.

Kind regards and pleasant Sunday,
Jeri

Hello John,
I like your strong diagonal composition with superb colours of this very dramatic landscape full of different textures. I only miss something that would help me to understand the scale which, as you write in the note, is enormous.
Best regards
Romana

Hi john! Beautiful dreamy photo. The different levels that exist in this photo are wonderful. The rocks, the water, the cloudy sky. Impressive photo!

Well Done!

Ilias

Hi John,
Great photo, combining a very impressive sky together with a good light on the rocks at the foreground and on the grass.
TFS.
Regards,
Marianne

You have an excellent eye for landscapes, John. You left plenty of room for this beautiful canyon and you have the sky rather flat without ignoring these wonderful clouds up there. I like that you included the stone in front giving the needed depth. This is so beautiful out there and you give something back with this excellent photo. Barbara.

Hi John.
Beautiful shot based on slash lines, with very good depth of field.
Well done.
Best regards.
Bobo.

John,
This is a great view of this magnificent place. Your composition is great using the river to lead the eye through the photo creating a diagonal composiiton. The lighting and colors are fine with nice sharpness and DOF.
TFS,
Asa

Fabulous light John. The image is sharp as a tack. The exposure is well handled and the diagonal line of the river makes for a more dynamic composition.

Please stop:-). Every time I think of visiting another country, I see one of your Iceland pics, and my heart beats faster, wants me to go back there...
What more can I say...sharp as razor, diagonal view that shows both the canyon and the marvellous landscape around it, the earth colors are of a superb finesse with all the variations shown, the light is magnificent. I love the way you combine a poetic and loving eye with such a masterful technique. One feels that you take the time for all this. That is a lesson I have to learn.
My compliments for your site too, John. !

Cheers
Michèle

Impressive shot John. This is a grand landscape and you have captured it with great light and a nice sense of atmosphere. I like how the river leads us back towards the grassy spot with the light hitting it just right. The clouds are perfect too. Beautiful.

Ryan

Hello John,

Great photo. First for the lightninh playing with the shadows, second for the composition with the canyon put on the diagonale, the sharp foreground and the great deep of field putting in focus all the elements of the picture. And third for the pleasure to see this wild landscape.
Yes, a good landscape photo, you perfectly used the wide angle lens.

Yves.

Hi John,
stunning view with the dramatic sky enhancing even more the great feeling of lonelyness and silence you brought in, with the compo working well thanks to the river who leads the eye through the vastity of this land. The perfect exposure allowed you to deliver a great quality full of well visible details and bright colours. Great!!
Thanks for sharing it.
Cheers,

Igor

Mi ero perso le tue ultime foto. L'Islands deve essere un luogo stupendo.
Cieli nuvolosi e sole che filtra fra le nuvole creano una luce perfetta per la fotografia di paesaggio.
Bellissimo
Ciao Stefano

Hi John,
simply a wonderful piece of earth.. so rare in Europe to find an area like this without houses or other signs of civilization.
Excellent technical quality and perspective,
Cheers Christian
