Photographer's Note

Strandarkirkja is located on the southern coast of Iceland, at the end of a small road. We wouldn't have even known it was there, except that there are no trees, and it was visible from miles away. It is a beautiful setting.

This church was constructed in 1888, but there has apparently been a church there since the 12th century. Legend has it that it was built in thanks for the saving of a group of sailors caught in a storm. (It has a Wikipedia page where you can read more).

As we walked up, the caretaker was just leaving; she just told us to shut the door when we were done and left. As we left, another group of visitors drove up, and we told them the same thing.
