Photographer's Note

After some rather dark and moody shots recently, I will show today a picture with a much cheerier mood.
Pictured here is John Cleere's Pub in Kilkenny, a small local Pub on Parliament Street on the outskirts of Kilkenny's town center.
We have spotted this Pub first just after the St. Paddy's parade on Sunday while walking towards the cathedral. What striked us then was how many local families with children and buggies headed all for this Pub.
The next day, the Monday bank holiday after St. Patricks day after touring the surrounding countryside of Kilkenny, we where in the mood for a Pub night. After consulting our guidebooks we headed for the Kyteler Inn as it was supposed to be one of the best music Pubs in town. But unless a Disneyland come Club Med experience is your thing, we suggest to avoid that house. There was a animator with a mike asking people where they where from (Give applause to the people from Boston), what an horror and we where out as fast as we where in.
So finally we decided to try John Cleere's and what a find it was. Arriving there where only a very few patroons sitting by an open fire. But soon after that people started to arrive and they where mostly locals. Then 2 guitars and a accordeon arrived and started to play. We where already surprised that most of the patroons seemed to know each other but soon we discoverd why. Because after a while an older gentlemen came from the crowds and after consulting the musicians started to sing in the most beautiful voice some truly traditional songs, then a huge harp arrived and started to chat up some girls giggling at the bar and shure enough soon thereafter the three girls started to sing some songs in gaelic, accompanied by the harp. Next up was a guy reciting some poems, then a comedy act came on. And so it went on all night, you never knew who out of the patroons was up next. It all ended long after midnight in a lock in and while exiting the Pub even one of the locals assured us that this has been a particulary good night.
So, long story, short message: If ever you are in Kilkenny on a Monday night, be sure to go to John Cleere's and you are in for a real treat. Surely one of the best muscical Pubs in Ireland.
