| So, I was finally able to catch a butterfly on a butterfly tree! These beautiful plants (Buddleia davidii) grow in abundance in Ireland, and they're the largest I've ever seen. Some of them were literally three stories (25-30 feet) high! They draw hummingbirds and butterflies, and bloom from mid-July through frost, producing large flower spikes that look and smell like lilacs. They come in a variety of colors, but I only saw the deep purple ones in Ireland. I have them in yellow, purple and white but there are also others. This was taken at the old wool mill at Avoca. I just barely captured the Painted Lady butterfly as it landed on the flower spike! |
