Photographer’s Note

Spiderman e i Fantastici Quattro...

I grew up with cartoons and comics - in Italy we had a TV program called "Supergulp", it used to go live every Thursday evening and everyone in my age group will remember that. it was a mix of Italian and International (read: Marvel) cartoons - I think I mentioned before I am a big Marvel fan...
but before Supergulp and before Marvel, there were the old American cartoons from the '30s and the '40s, the first b/w Disney shorts, Betty Boop and - my favourite - popeye . I used to sing the jingle, even before I could speak English, and marvel at the sailor who could pop spinach cans with his bare hands and was in love with tall, clumsy Olive Oyl.
for some reason these two sailors have always reminded me of Popeye...
by the way, this is one of my favourite photos of all time, shot originally on Fuji colour film many years ago in Rome, during a changing of the guards at the Quirinale.
