035 / The village of Vernazza, in Italy's Cinque Terre

One of Italy's most popular attractions, the dramatic Cinque Terre consists of five seaside villages strung along a particularly rugged stretch of coastline. Ingeniously constructed, the Cinque Terre villages are characterised by pastel hued townhouses that tumble down terraced hillsides to tiny, picture-perfect waterfronts, and are connected by sinuous hiking paths and a scenic railway line (cars were thankfully banned a long time ago). Of the five, Vernazza is often considered the most 'authentic', retaining much of its original fishing village character and sporting the region's most acclaimed wine. The place is, quite obviously, best soaked in from one of the cafes along its petite waterfront.
