Photographer's Note

Villa Romana del Casale is a Roman villa (1st quarter of the 4th century A.D.) near the town Piazza Armerina, Enna in Sicilia, Italy. Every bit of its floor is covered with mosaic work. Here you can see a small part of a geometric pattern, but there are all kinds of depictions to be seen. The artwork is not of the best quality, however its amazing extent and good condition has earned it the title and protection of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I visited the villa under one of the hottest suns I can remember. The protective glass (or plastic) all around made breathing hard and the heat unbearable. And still many rooms were "inhabited" by preservers and their tools. It was almost as interesting as the villa itself: it is a rare chance to see this kind of work in progress. The picture format is small of course, but if you look closely you can even see the small numbered tags on the various parts of the mosaic.
PP: Added constrast. Increased sharpness (overall and local) after resizing.
