The Natural Viewfinder Photo

Photographer’s Note

This photo has been taken during a safety walk to avoid lying too long like a seal on the Porto Giunco beach near Villasimius, after a small ride uphill I came to enjoy this view towards the Capo Carbonara, which is the point dividing the east and south coasts of Sardegna. Off the capo is the "isola dei cavoli" which you see flattened from this point.

The main point of interest to spot on this island is the lighthouse, that I captured here using this convenient natural viewfinder, of course given the relative distances between me, the viewfinder and the subject I had to use this rather unusual aperture and up the ISO to get enough speed for my focal length.

La je dois dire c'est tres tres bien vu! Quelle profondeur de champ en plus c'est assez remarquable. Ça t'a coute en grains en t'obligeant a monter en ISO effectivement mais la photo reste magnifique, pas de probleme avec ca. Tu n'aurais pas plus pose un peu plus longtemps? ou y avait-il un vent meme leger qui aurait cree des bouges sur l'opuntia? D'ailleurs pour ce type de photo mettant des elements vegetaux en avant et voulant cependant utiliser une profondeur de champ importante pour garder le contexte dans lequel vive ces vegetaux, es-tu content de ton objectif? Je suis a la recherche d'un objectif optimal pour ce type de cliches un peu speciaux.

Tres belle photo en tous les cas, pour laquelle je ne pourrais imaginer qu'un bonus supplementaire: un bouton d'opuntia avec une fleur bien jaune qui sort au sommet!

Quite clever framing indeed. I wonder what makes those holes. Simple scene really turned to something different. Is that sort of cactus common over there?
I guess you are not used to that ISO as I can see some noise in the sky. Smart blur tool should work pretty well on such.

Bonjour, Jean-Yves. Le cadrage est original et, comme tu le dis, le plus dur ici était de garder la netteté à l'avant et à l'arrière, ce que tu as plutôt bien réussi. L'image garde son piqué (ou piquant peu-être).

Uh, this is what I call photography! What a natural and unusual frame for this lighthouse! You must have had a lot of fun when you saw this possibility:) And well, f/29 has paid off in terms of sharpness. Bravo for having seen this!

I love these kind of shots, but you must have an exceptionally keen eye to have spotted the potential of this one. Fantastic work. Good use of DOF and excellent focus have created an original image. I don't see the noise that Kari mentions, although I would expect it with ISO 800.

L'idée de ce viseur végétale est excellente et amène de l'originalité à ce paysage. La profondeur de champ est impressionnante et tous les éléments sont parfaitement net.
La composition est très bien réalisée dans les règles de l'art et donne quelque chose de très équilibré.

While I was looking this picture without looking to the technical data of it I was asking myself about your shutter and exposure and right: high and low. Taking this unsually high ISO gave you also some noise, that doesn't bother me at all. Otherwise you never would have achieved this fantastic DOF. Extremely well seen and captured, Jean Yves. Quite original moment!

Ha! Great idea to shoot the lighthouse through the hole in the cactus, it really gives this shot a playful feeling. I'm not sure if I even have a lens that goes to f29, but it sure was useful in this case. Great work!

What an awesome concept. The cactus is a perfect frame since it itself is so interesting and the green is a decent contrast to the blue sky. I notice that you've even used the rule of thirds within your "viewfinder."

Hi JY, brilliantly captured. Well positioned with the lighthouse image as seen through the cactus. I also like how you have managed to capture the hills in the background which gives overall dimension to your composition. The blue sea appears slightly grainy, or is it my imagination. Well captured and seen. Tfs.

je trouve cette composition très bien pensée, avec un cadrage en profitant du trou dans ce cactus pour créer une fenêtre qui nous laisse voir le phare.
Très simple mais agréable, avec un paysage joli de la mer, l'île du phare et le ciel splendide.
Des belles couleurs aussi.

Je connaissais les penne ou les spaghetti, mais pas le capo. J'espère au moins que tu as dégusté des bonnes pasta là bas! :o)
Le moins qu'on puisse dire c'est que cette image ne manque pas de piquant et je comprends que tu aies abondonné le 10mm au profit d'une focale un peu plus longue afin de garder tes distances...
Plus que 2 jours! :o))

Vraiment fort ici la composition. J'aime beaucoup la grande originalité de cette prise. On parle souvent de bonne composition ici, peut être trop facilement, mais ici je trouve que c'est une hommage à la composition... Je fais une demande à Wikipedia pour que ta photo se retrouve avec la définition de composition.

Une superbe prise sans contredit. Hop dans les favorites....

Hi JY. Fun idea with this one and a well-seen opportunity to see the lighthouse through the hole in the cactus. A favorable sun angle as well, giving a nice range of greens in the cactus and some shadows of the spikes. Framing-wise the left portion is quite "heavy", so I would consider a crop - not as much as humanist - but let's say to the right of the highest slope in the back, and proportionally off the top. Good shot.

Le catcus resmeble un de ces telescopes urbaines on locatio par pieces dans plusieurs endroits. Le cadrage et lumiere sont magnifiques.

You did amazingly well to spot this viewpoint! And the execution is marvellous with that tremendous depth of field. Great definition on the lighthouse despite its distance. Lovely colours and lighting on the cactus. But I wonder if somebody came before you, and put that convenient hole in the cactus?! Anyway, a teriffic photo, Jean Yves.

Marrant ce cadrage. Ca fait toujours du bien d'avoir un peu d'humour dans ce mond de brutes :D
Bonne idée et belle réalisation technique car arriver à avoir une telle profondeur de champ était un challenge... réussi
J'aime bien aussi le reste de la composition un 1/3 2/3 impeccable entre mer et ciel de couleur quasimment uniforme avec cette bande de rocher uniforme.
Une image vraiment plaisante, bravo !

Il a du piquant ce cadrage, j'aime beaucoup.
Un belle prise de vue sur tous les points, les couleurs et ce joli contraste entre le vert du cactus et les tons bleus, la lumière excellente ainsi qu'une bonne netteté.
