THE CASTLE CROWNING THE HILL — PORTOFINO

I've had to slow down my Trekearth activities while my teaching duties and work on a new book have taken center stage. But an occasional "photographic fix" is a necessity for any TE addict!

The image shows the spectacular resort of Portofino in the region of Liguria, in the province of Genova. According to Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, this small fishing village was founded by the Romans, who, in seeing how the small bay was teeming with dolphins, named it Portus Delphinis, or “Port of the Dolphins.” Two thousand years later Portofino is still a small fishing village, with an area of 2.6 square km and a population of 512. But during the summers it transforms into an artists’ colony and an expensive resort for tourists from the northern hinterland of Europe.

Last July 16, 2007 the cruise ship, Crystal Serenity, on which I was giving lectures visited the small bay. The bay is much too small and shallow to accommodate large ships. Accordingly, the ship anchored outside the port, allowing passengers to be tendered to shore. The town’s population can double and triple when a sizeable cruise ship visits.

At the summit of the hill stands the 15th century edifice known by the unlikely apellation, "Brown's Castle." During the Victorian Era, Montague Yeat Brown, the English Consul in Genoa, had purchased the castle to serve as a summer home for the Brown family. Two months ago I had submitted a photograph to Trekearth, Port of Dolphins, showing the view of Portofino from the top of the hill looking in this direction.

I shot the photo with a Nikon D70, 18-70 mm Nikkor lens, UV-filter. An unusually light Quantaray OSX-Digi Pro-100 tripod has become an indispensable part of my camera gear, serving virtually as a handle. Except for the simple frame, there is no post-processing.

Warm regards to my friends...

Bulent

This is a very beautiful picture! Fantastic pov showing the boats, the lovely trees, and then the castle. I love the color of the water!! Very very pretty! TFS

Hello, Bulent, it's been a while!

Nicely rendered image, with subtle diagonals, and lovely color in the reflections. The boat in the center reminds me of the Venetian gondolas, but I doubt there's really any connection.

Best,
Dan

Hello dear Bullent,

Great Point Of View, great colours and excellent composition.

Hello Bulent,

Hello my friend Bulent.
I was in Genoa for 25 years ago for a cruise with the La Casta line, What I saw of it was old and nice. Your shot is also very well taken, with a fine pov in a good composition, welcome back. have a fine day

Yes, Portofino, that's one place I would not mind visiting.
Hi Bulent,
Hope the work on your book is progressing but indeed a dose of TL provides a great balance.
TFS this beautiful place. Normally I would like "landscape format", but here you just have to use "portrait".

Hello Bulent. I too find so little time to critique photos with work demands and other photographic goals to achieve. I must keep in touch with famous trekkers like you though!!

The castle above capping the vertical frame really brings into perspective a wonderful sense of scale. It looks like a beautiful warm sunny day for sure. Thanks for sharing Bulent!

Hi, Master,
As usual a very balanced and impressive capture of la bella Italia. The castle topping this cascade of trees and plants is a good idea.
I like the softened colours.

Hello Bulent,
A very pretty composition of this lovely harbour dominated by the 'castle'; excellent use of the vertical format. Very good colours and clarity.

Hello Bulent Bey,
Wow a wonderful angle on your lens. From top to bottom, the details and the colors, the sharpness is very nice. The blue of the sky and sea, with the green hill make this a very attractive photo.
Best personal regards. Salvator.

Hello Bulent,
a point of view very impressive of this castle perched on its hill. I suppose that the sight from the top must be superb. You succeeded also with the lines of the trees and colored bushes which go up along the rocks. Exposure, colour and composition are all excellent as well as the note.
I wish you an excellent work on your new book, I'm looking forward to read it.
Have a nice weekend, warm regards.
Stella

When I have the time I always go into your site to see if I had miss anything, it was nice to find you here again. I work with abused children but when I get onto TE, it is like a brake away from the sad and ugliness, seen sometimes throw the night. Being an author of children stories, I make up many stories about some of the pictures I have the privilege of seeing on TE.Before I write any of it down I tells them to the kids that I work with, and although we are all strangers, every story seemed to entwine us together somehow. Thanks for another lovely picture

I like how you decided to crop this, the long vertical photo really added to the effect. This has enabled to give depth in 2 directions, the boats draw the eye into the photo, while the high cliff/castle then bring it upward. Very well done Rodney

I like the 'layering' in this image - full of interest at every level :)

Hello Bulent,
Beautiful vertical presentation of this lovely little harbor with its turquoise water that is so croweded with boats as it leads up the shear green cliffs to the beautiful castle with the non-Italian name. Very informative note of the areas history.

Hi Bulent,
A nice and luminous image, the bottom part calls for summer holiday and I like its visual progression up to the eagle's nest house following your bottom up approach and the appropriate vertical framing.
Have a nice day,

Hello Bulent
A very nice POV with a good combination of different scenes, marina, green hill and on top the castle. It is well balanced and presented in a nice vertical format with fine sharpness.

Hi Bulent,
This vertical format creates good depth, with the eye following the scene inward and upward to absorb the three distinct areas of interest. You maintained high quality despite the number of pixels required by trees and leaves, and the lighting is just right. A fine note as always. Well captured, my friend.

Merhaba,
An excellent composition that is full of many distinct elements. There's no redundant or empty space. Some color adjustment or color boosting would compensate the daylight harshness. Best wishes,
Hakan

Bulent, the classic view of this unique place called Portofino. I have been there once and your shot portraits excatly my remembrance of the landscape and architecture of the region. Wonderful wide angle including the castle on the top, all the long slope with luxious greesn and the boats at the bottom.
Regards, Peter

Hi Bulent,

Not exactly the way Frank Lloyd Wright taught us how to integrate the architecture in the landscape but certainly an example of a well placed building. And the small port beneath makes the place even more attractive.

Groet Rob

Hi Bulent
Impressive height at this image. Great perspective at the castle from the sea level and good light.

Hello Bulent. The portrait orientation was the best way to show off all the beauty to be found here. I think the people add scale and bring it to life. The colors are nice and the saturation is realistic. Good luck with your new book!

Hi Bülent,

An appreciable vertical format to present to us of charming small Italian port. A composition which has much relief and very pleasant to look at and to detail with my mouse of bottom upwards. Beautiful management of the colors and the light. The entry in bottom, if it is the access to this beautiful castle, it is necessary to have courage !!!

Hej Bulent,
A great view of this village with a lovely, calm summer atmosphere. The castle on top of the hill looks great with the trees nicely growing against the hill. The water in front leads the eye nicely to it and is nicely framed by the boats. Good work!

Bonjour, mon cher ami Bulent,
