Photographer’s Note

J'étais tombé sur la tête.
Venise avait perturbé mes sens.
Je fixais le soleil pour découvrir les ombres.
Je regardais le sol pour voir vivre les hommes.

Les vieilles dalles des ruelles étaient bien rangées.
Et les vieilles dames donnaient des leçons de morale.
Les enfants jouaient à courser les pigeons.
Les boutiques de souvenir aussi.

Je regardais les mères qui attrapaient leurs enfants.
Il faisait froid.
Il fallait s'habiller.
Et obéir à maman.

I had fallen on the head.
Venice had put me without top below.
I fixed the sun to discover shades.
I looked at the ground to see living beings.
The old flagstones of the lanes were well arranged.
The old ladies continued their lessons of morals.
The children played catching the birds.
Souvenir shops also.
I looked at the mothers who retained their children.
The weather was cold.
It was necessary to get dressed.
And to obey mom.

Hi Bertrand,

I'm very impressed by this excellent shot! It is powerful positive negative visual impact of people silhuettes and their figures illuminated only by their edges. Excellent choise of rotating image and make shadows alive and light explode into above. Marvelous visual impact, excellentlly composed and presented.

Bertrand, cette photo est superbe et ce monde à l'envers est bien celui de l'enfance. La poésie et le fantastique est un monde qu'on ne devrait pas quitter.
J'aime que le sol devienne plafond et que les ombres soit plus vraies que ce qu'elles représentent.

Hello Bertrand,

A very challenging composition! Taking it this way, I might even have cut off the people and only gone for the reflection! Very interesting to look at. I think I would have preferred it flipped around. And I'm wondering how it would have looked like without the people on it and cut off at the bottom of the reflection. Interesting!

It needs some Sunday morning yoga to see what you were doing :) I never liked to obey and I always wanted to wear a skirt, especially when spring arrived, and we had huge discussions my mother and I. I did not care about cold weather but rather have a running nose after ... it takes a while to work out what we are looking at, a very arty shot, but also looking at it the right way works for me. The play with light and shadows is well managed and fine colour tones.

Fantastic idea to turn this photo upside down for a very strong effect of the shadows. The light management is excellent and it's beautiful to see how the light only falls on a small part of the square, but at least right there where you could capture the shadows of those three people. Great inclusion of the pavement in the upper half of the shot too. Thanks a lot for sharing this very creative and artistic work!

j'aime beaucoup l'idée d'avoir renversé la photo!Au début,je n'ai pas bien compris,je pensais voir des ombres au plafond,et me demandais comment c'était possible!Les vrais personnages sont presque inexistants,tant ils disparaissent dans l'ombre,ce qui donne un effet assez surnaturel!Tu as eu vraiment de la chance de pouvoir les photographier juste au moment où ils étaient dans l'ovale de lumière.Vraiment superbe!

Je suis toujours extrêment attirée par les photos de contre jour, avec leur silhouettes bien dessinées, leurs lumières rasantes, leur sobrité de détails. Elles peuvent être trés puissantes, en ramenant les êtres à l'essentiel.
Tu a fait là un boulot superbe, tout y est. Et le renversement est fondamental : j'ai regardé la photo à l'endroit, et la scène, tout en restant trés graphique, perds son sens : l'habillage n'est plus "lisible".
Voilà une photo dont je suis bien jalouse.

Salut Bertrand, génial ça, j'aime beaucoup et suis également un amateur de ce genre de cliché, c'est ninaL qui avait suscité en moi cet intéret et je trouve les résultats assez intéressants et percutants ces retournés d'ombres. D'ailleurs c'est pas mal aussi en laissant les "vrais" gens, la tete a l'envers cette fois :)
Je sais pas si c'était indispensable ici mais la clé du succès est ce "V" de lumière mais surtout qu'il y a une scène, cet habillage de fifille par maman sous le regard de papa.

Ah Bertrand, quelle photo qui nous met sens dessus dessous! C'est un vrai monde parralèle que celui des ombres, avec leurs petites tailles, leur léger halo et le fantastique contraste avec les pavés. Une photo exceptionnelle.

Wonderful use of light, Bertrand! I like the idea to put it upside down, turning the shadows into the real people and the real people into shadows. The sun becomes a giant spotlight, and the "overhead" stones provide rhythm. It's all beautifully harmonious! Regards, Ken.
