Photographer’s Note

Tandis que des foules ébahies défilaient sous le pont des soupirs,
Tandis que les vaporettos pressés chahutaient le grand canal,
je poursuivais ma quête des ombres, des zones sombres, et des contrastes de lumière.
Les gondoles de Venise sont de tous les clichés, de toutes les idées qu'on se fait de la ville.
Mais c'est avec leurs ombres qu'on peut les voir danser.

While amazed crowd ravelled under the bridge of the sighs,
While the vaporettos in a hurry raged the large channel,
I continued my search of the shades, the dark zones, and contrasts of light.
The gondoles of Venice are of all the stereotypes, of all the ideas that one made on the city.
But it is with their shades that one can see them dancing.

Great backlight Bertrand!
And a beautiful depiction of this favourite place. I like the silhouettes and the narrow cadrage. The bridge and the light over the BG are very nice.

Salut Bertrand,

Le succès d'un personnage en silhouette dépend largement de l'action qu'il accomplit. Plus le le sujet est saisi lors d'un mouvement distinct et correspondant à son activité, plus la photo apparait représentative et pertinente.

C'est le cas ici alors que le gondolier est bien cambré et qu'il procède à son coup de rame. Sa silhouette est bien placée dans la zone de lumière, de même que dans la composition. Excellent travail.

Ciao Bertrand il mio vicino,
He he on voit que le spectacle n'attire pas que les membres de TE il y a foule sur ce pot pour regarder passer le gondolier !
Et pour le cadrage de ton image c'est impeccable car la silhouette se detache parfaitement sur les hautes lumieres de l'eau, une belle image.

j'espere un jour retourné a VENISE faire des photos avec mon d200 car dans les années 2000 je n'avait que pris peu de photo car j'avait seulement un petit appareil compact.

Hello Bertrand,

Ombres, lumières et... touristes ! La posture du gondolier ressemble effectivement à une dance entre eau et bateau ! Ces équilibristes ne semble pas perturber par les remous de l'eau et par le mouvement de leurs passagers !
Une belle image de nouveau assez atypique de Venise !

It is so difficult to create a view of Venice so done to tell us something new about this subject!!
Here I like so much to see so many people watching from the bridge, and I like the gondola silhouette not totally black.

What a pity, if I would know that you were there we could meet for some hours, I live not far from Venice, a little more than one hour.

Il y a d'abord le geste dont on perçoit toute l'élégance et puis ensuite on découvre tous les petits plus qui rendent cette photo très belle, les douces ondulations de l'eau, ce couloir noir qui encadre le bateau et le public au fond et dans la lumière, une mise en scène inversée en quelque sorte.
très bon boulot!!

quelles silhouettes élégantes que celle du gondolier et de son bateau!Celles-ci se dessinent dans une partie bien claire,ce qui les met parfaitement en valeur!J'aime beaucoup l'eau bleue et ses reflets tour à tour noirs et argentés.Le pont ajoute une rélle beauté à la composition!

Trés jolie lumière sur l'eau, mais j'aime surtout la silhouette du gondolier, qui montre de manière parfaite plein de détails techniques : la position particulière pour gondolier, la dame de nage avec sa forme particulière et (last but not least), le fait que l'arrière de la gondole est volontairement légèrement tordu ! Rassures-toi, je tire mon peu de savir sur le sujet d'un article que j'avais lu dans la revue "Le Chasse-marée"...

I like this image very much. Even without the top part with the people on the bridge it would be good, as the silhouettes are perfect on the bright water of the canal. Adding the top is a wonderful extra feature. Well done

Hi Bertrand. I might have been tempted to crop the bridge right out and concentrate on the simplicity of the silhouette. I feel it is strong enough on it's own. Wonderful capture and thanks for sharing.

beautiful backlight, bertrand! the silhouette is sharp and the details are clear. It gives your the feel of Venice ver well. I like the crowd watching him, but it could still be a good photo without them.

Hello Bertrand,
I love the way this gondola and the 'gondolieri' appears in the shade like a chinese shadow, or better, it seems like a 'marionette' held by those persons on the bridge.
I see you tried very different to usual approachs and you succeeded well IMO.
Reading your note gave me an idea for another approach to this photo of yours so I tried a WS, hope you don't mind and tell me what you think about it.

Wonderful use of the backlight, Bertrand, and perfect selection of exposure to create one of the best shots that you have posted for a while (and that's saying something given the high standard of all your posts). An alternative crop would have been just above the archway of the bridge (i.e. not showing the people on the bridge) - but I think your original is more suited as a 'travel' photograph for TE - maybe you could try the alternative crop and post that to TL :) Cheers . . .
