Pompeii Gymnasium

| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
Within the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii is a vast gymnasium consisting of a large rectangular courtyard surrounded by a high wall. These columns are on the interior of the outer wall and a roof over them creates a covered hallway around the interior perimeter of the structure.
The gymnasium was a training facility for competitors in the games held in the neighboring colosseum. There is a swimming pool in the grassy infield. Athletes and gladiators trained here, and occasionally the grounds were flooded and mock sea battles were held here.
I saw Pompeii for the first time a few weeks ago and I was astounded. A prosperous and busy city with a population of over 20,000 before it was destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 67 A.D., if you go to Pompeii expecting to see a few piles of burned rubble, you will be amazed (like I was). So much of the city has been unearthed intact; you can walk through its maze of cobblestone streets, see its shops and villas and vineyards, and even admire colorful frescoes that somehow were preserved so well you would never guess that they were painted 2,000 years ago. |
