With this shot I would like to convey the strange feelings that pervade Trieste and its citizens in this time of European enlargement.
This is the border between Slovenia (former republic of Yugoslavia) and Italy. This border has not always been there. In the last century it moved at least 3 times, with two world wars for it (right next month there are going to be big celebrations for the 50 years of the -second- returning of Trieste to Italy). You can imagine how many people have died to "move" this border. Still in the sixties, to cross this border meant big troubles with visas, passports etc. It was the Iron Curtain, from Stetten to Trieste. Families were divided, farmers had their fields on the other side of the borders, italians and slovene were reciprocally discriminated etc.
Nowadays, with Slovenia in the EU, crossing the border is something you can do just for jogging, nobody controls anything. The only visible trace that remains of this "ancient" state of mind is this sign, which peremtorily indicates that the border is at 1 meter away. Unfortunately, still some Triestinian citizens have such a label in their minds.
Technical notes: panorama picture with two vertical frames, focal lenght 38 mm, cropping and curve editing in Photoshop. It has been quite difficoult to manage the strong facing light. Eventually, the best shot was this one, without flash. Flash created troubles because of the reflectivity of the sign. Photo taken at 7:50 AM (figure out at what time I woke up :-)
PS The road you see is the former railroad from Trieste to Vienna, nowadays converted ina cycle path.

Hi Marko,
Everybody knows about divided Berlin, but Trieste/Trst/Triest and Gorizia/Gorica/Görz was also very dramatic, and remained more time.
Interesting photo of perhaps a new dawn for Europe/Europa/Evropa.
Regards,
F
