[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
October 9th, 1963 - 10.39 pm (local time)
One of the worst tragedies and one of the darkest pages in Italian history.

The Vajont Dam was, and still is, the tallest dam of its kind in the world. Built between January 1957 and September 1959, it's 261.60 m tall and able to contain 168 millions cubic metres of water.
When Mount Toc, standing to the side of the dam, decided it had had enough and came down over its nearby towns, it created a wave of scary proportions:
150 metres tall and anything between 500 and 800 metres wide, the wave had a mass of 260 millions cubic metres.
The towns of Longarone, Rivalta, Pirago, Fae' and Villanova were virtually wiped out, killing a grand total of 1910 people, only a few houses remaining intact.
This is such a tragedy, more so as it was never a natural one. Of all the research that went into the whens and hows of the construction of the dam, the powers that be decided that all the alarm bells, all the findings against it, all that could stop this massive project was to be buried deep into the Italian burocracy, never to be talked about again. When, finally admitting that something seriously wrong was about to happen, those powers could have evacuated the area, they chose not to.
Of all the people involved as culprits in this huge cover up, 11 in total, all brought to Court, only two were found guilty, both at first sentencing and on appeal, and received a grand total of eight years and eight months in prison. Three of those eleven died (one killing himself), and all the others were found not guilty. The whole proceedings terminated just fifteen days shy of the seven and a half years that it takes for a crime to "cease" to be prosecuted, according to Italian law. Another 16 days and they would have all walked free. This was in March 1971. However, the town of Longarone had to wait until February 1997 to finally be awarded the money to cover for all the damages caused by the very, very bad judgement call that all those 11 made. They all knew and they all shut up.
Just a little picture to remember, Mount Toc still standing tall in the background.

Igor

Igor,
This is a very beautiful image taken with much sensitivity and in memories of the people who lost their life and for those who lost their love one on the day. The landscape seem peaceful and beautiful. Everything seems the same as if nothing has happened but everything is changed. Beautiful dedication.

Hello Igor,
A beautiful floral tribute to the memory of people who perished in the tragedy. A quality photo with beautiful mountain background & blue sky. Regards. Latiff.

Ciao Igor,

Bellissima idea.
Ciao.
Bobo.

Hello Igor,

A very moving and poignant tale.
It tells us how calus some people can be and value reputations above life!

This is a beautifully composed shot with the softness of the transient beauty of the flowers set against the mighty and magnificent beauty of the scenery.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

hello igor
some spooky quality to the light in this one and i find it very appropriate for the message you are delivering.

i bow my head

regards
kristaps

ps. what exactly happened there. in your note, you said mt. toc came down over its nearby towns. was it an avalanche? eruption?

Ciao e buon fine settimana
Vinicio

Igor,
you certainly are someone that doses the posts at TE. It always takes quite a while to have the privilege to see some of your new works, but when it comes it is there with full force. Strong saturation and colors well saturated is certainly a hallmark, but than the composition is also a great one. Nice vertical framing of this scene with the flowers in the foreground. It seems to me that the almost backlight didn't bother you a bit.
Peter

Ciao Igor,

Bravo Igor!

Ciao Igor,
Complimenti my friend!

Ci conto.
Ti auguro un ottimo WE
Freddy

Hello Igor,

From the photograph to the most poignant note, this is a first rate Trekearth package. The image, placing the majestic mountain on the horizon and the ephemeral flowers in the foreground represents a contrasting dichotomy. During the two years I've belonged to TE, my frames/mats have increased, then decreased in size. I think, I would have made this image somewhat larger, with less mat showing.

As for the note, I remember a little about the tragedy, but did not know the scale. Nor did I know of the coverup and eventual settlement, an affair that obviously lingered on for four decades, from the beginning of the construction to the settlement in 1997.

Warm regards and have a good weekend,

Bulent

Hello Igor,

This is a very great honor that you bringing a remembrance to the calamity and the 1910 victims.
The flowers and mountainsin background care for a nic epicture.
Composition and presentation are superb.
Very well done, TFS.

Brest regards,
John.

Hello Igor:

I like the composition you've created here, but even more I like the simple and sincere tribute you offer to your note and your photo to the victims of that tragedy.

A beautiful frame in a plane closed, with beautiful colors and excellent definition of the elements. Thanks for sharing.

John

Ciao Igor,

Complimenti!

Gio

Hello Igor,

A very nice landscape and a very beautiful view of this landscape. I like especially the good use of vertical format, the superb FG with the red flowers and the great prosoect to the mountains. A very good photowork.
Have a good evening,
Roger

Hi Igor,

I really like what you did here. Placing that flower as the first focal point against the beautiful mountains on the back was a clever decision. What a sad happening...the flower is a symbol of the persistent life and fits very well in here. Great post!

Carlos

Ciao Igor,

Enhorabuena!

Feliz fin de semana.
JR

Hi Igor,
I'd heard about but didn't know many details of this tragedy that occurred when I was exactly six days old, so it was interesting (and of course shocking) to read your account and visit the vajont website. Your photo of these simple backlit flowers is a moving tribute.
John

MArco

What a tragic story of bureaucratic irresponsibility, Igor. The image and the story make a powerful combination--they fit together, particularly with those dark red flowers and overall dark tones conveying a feeling of tragedy. Regards, Ken.

Hi Igor,

I had never heard about this drama before, very interesting note. I like the photo, good use of Dof, and nice contrast between the intense colours of the flowers and the background. TFS

Hi Igor!
Surely a great homage to the victims of this tragedy!Unfortunately, in this kind of situations the guilty are always hard to find, that's the same everywhere. I like this photo a lot, the way you show the flowers in foreground and the mountain in background, the light. Good photo and note!

Ciao Igor!
Ciao!
MarieLouise.

Ciao Igor, how are you ?, I was there not this time but nine years ago, most of the external scars are gone but with such a large scale of destruction & loss of human life it may never be forgotten. I like this shot, the others show us more of the dam & it's position but this with the bunch of RED roses has captured a real sombre mood, the image is of excellent quality as always but the important thing here I think is the atmosphere that you have successfully captured.
Bravo
Saluti
