Photographer’s Note
The Jelgava castle is the most sublime baroque palace in the Baltic States and the greatest early period work of F.B. Rastrelli, the famous architect of the Russian court. In this palace in emigration two periods (1798-1801 and 1805-1807)has spent the later French king Luis XVII. The palace contains the sarcophagi of all of the Curonian dukes.
Jelgava is a town in central Latvia about 41 km southwest of Riga with 66,087 inhabitants (2006). Jelgava is often remembered as the former capital of the Duchy of Courland (as Mitau), and was the capital of the Courland region until 1919.
This pretty city situated on the banks of the Lielupe river is the provincial capital of Zemgale. It was first mentioned in historical documents in 1264, when the Livonian Order began to build a wooden castle on what is now Jelgava. The new Jelgava castle was built during the reign of Duke Biron (1737 - 69). In 1795 the Duchy of Courland was united with Russia.
Over the centuries Jelgava developed into a trade and manufacturing centre. In the 18th century, Jelgava was Latvia's major printing centre. The first Latvian-language newspaper was printed here. After becoming a rail centre in the 19th century, the city was nearly destroyed in WWII. Today, it is the only inland maritime harbour in Latvia and it's also the most significant industrial centre of the Zemgale region.
Jelgava boasts being the birthplace of the first Latvian republic's last president, Kārlis Ulmanis. Jānis Čakste, Latvia's first president, and Alberts Kviesis, Latvia's third president, both graduated from the same Jelgava high school.

Hello Ivana,

Hi Ivana. I've just been looking at your shots from Latvia. I don't think I've looked at any from that country before. They're very good. This one has a slightly under-exposed look which I like. The composition of the scene is good, and the water looks beautiful against the light reflecting from that marvellous palace. Excellent shot.

Andrew

Hi Ivana,
This a beautiful and crisp capture of this fascinating Latvian castle. I love the mood here, a consequence of the darkish hues you use here, and the compo in horizontal layers is nicely pleasing too. The velvetty rendition of the water is fab.
Have a nice evening,
Bert
