Skyline #5: Riga

Next stop in the series of skylines: the city of Riga, capital of Latvia, captured from the tower of Svētā Pētera baznīca (St Peter's Church) when I visited the city two years ago.

Just like the city of Tallinn, Riga (founded in 1201) was a member of the medieval Hanseatic League. The old town (Vecrīga) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Riga lies on the Gulf of Riga at the mouth of the river Daugava. With almost 700,000 inhabitants it is the largest city in the country and the Baltic states. The most prominent buildings in the photo are Rīgas Doms (Riga Cathedral) and the City Hall (white building in the bottom left hand corner).

Hope you like this photo, one more European skyline to go..
