Photographer’s Note

View of Triesenberg (Tresabärg), one of the villages of the Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein; Alemannisch: Förschtatum Liachtaschtä).
The Liechtenstein is one of the smallest independent countries in the world; area 160 km² (62 sq mi), about 24 km (15 miles) long, from north to south; population 34,000. It is bordered by Switzerland to its west, along the Upper Rhine river, and by the Alps of Austria to its east. The capital is Vaduz (pop. 5,300). The official language is German, but the spoken language is Alemannisch or Alemannic German. Most people follow the Roman Catholic faith. The population enjoys one of the world's highest standards of living.
The Principality of Liechtenstein is a constitutional monarchy, headed by Prince Hans-Adam II. Historically, the Liechteinstein was as a fief of the Holy Roman Empire (Heiliges Römisches Reich) and can be regarded as the only sucessor of it. The country takes its name from the Liechteinstein dinasty, which comes from the castle Burg Liechtenstein, in Lower Austria, a family possession since at least 1140. The Princes of Liechtenstein still live in Schloss Vaduz, a fairy tale castle overlooking the capital of the Principality.
