Photographer’s Note
In 1962 this missile based was opened by the soviet-union army somewhere lost in the middle of a forest in Lithuania. Four silots like this(covered by a dome) where ready ! Each of them contained a nuclear missile (22m high - 2000 km/H - 10 times more powerful than Hiroshima). They were pointing at different big European countries. The cold war threath was a reality ! Hopefuly nobody pushed on the button. In 1978 it was dismanteld. Today you can visit the empty silot.... and empty bunker.

Living through the feelings of the cold war it's quite chilling to see this source of potential megadeath - it seems such a simple non-descript place - perhaps like the simple non-descript palces that killed millions in WW II - governments favour out of the way places to hide their ability to deal death - but how culpable are we as citizens in abdicating too much of our responsibilities to politicians?
Thanks for showing us this.

Grandeur et décadence ! Que de follies ne fait on pas avec l'argent du contribuable ! Encore un monument à la bétise humaine . La note vient à point nommé car sinon on n'aurait jamais deviné que c'était un ancien dépot nuclaire.

Thanks for the note AnneFrance. The note totally changed my point of view to this photo. The photo is just quite usual photo with a bunker but when I read the note I see the photo in different light. Such a horrible things happened so near - all the things that happened during cold-war and during the fall of the Soviet Union. Really hard to think of it, but this photo and note made it a bit more realistic to me. Thanks again and have a nice day in there.. =)
Just started to browse your collection, you have lot of good photos..
regards, Jarkko
