The tower of Gediminas is a watchtower located on the homonymous hill, that dominates the city of Vilna, originally was part of a castle already disappeared. There is a small archaeological museum inside.

The first known fortifications in that place were built in wood by Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania. The first castle built in brick was completed in 1409, at the time of Grand Duke Vytautas. Of this construction some remains are conserved, that have been recently restored.

The first tower dates from the thirteenth century, and had a higher floor. Its walls were damaged during the Russian occupation of 1655-1661. It was restored in 1930 to house a museum.

The tower is considered a symbol of the city and the country and as such appears in the litas, the national currency. In the same way it appears mentioned in numerous poems and songs.

La torre de Gediminas es una atalaya situada sobre la colina homónima, que domina la ciudad de Vilna, originalmente formó parte de un castillo ya desaparecido. Existe en su interior un pequeño museo arqueológico.

Las primeras fortificaciones conocidas en ese lugar fueron construidas en madera por Gediminas, gran duque de Lituania. El primer castillo construido en ladrillo se terminó en 1409, en época del gran duque Vitautas. De dicha construcción se conservan algunos restos, que han sido restaurados recientemente.

La primera torre data del siglo XIII, y poseía un piso más de altura. Sus muros fueron dañados durante la ocupación rusa de 1655-1661. Fue restaurada en 1930 para acoger un museo.

La torre se considera un símbolo de la ciudad y del país y como tal aparece en la litas, la moneda nacional. De la misma manera aparece mencionado en numerosos poemas y canciones.
