Photographer's Note

Now and then I like to show a typical postcard view. This one is from Ohrid in western Macedonia ("FYR"), situated by Lake Ohrid which is shared with Albania.

This photo was taken soon after I had arrived by bus from Skopje, the capital, and checked into a hotel in the modern part of the city. Now I was walking along the lake on my way to the old town. It was a dull day in September, the tourist season was almost over and business wasn't so good for the owners of sightseeing boats. The next day the sun was back and hopefully business was better.

On top of the hill you can see Samuel's Fortress (Самуилова тврдина), originally built in the 10th century and named after the Bulgarian Tsar of that time. On the same hill, but not seen from here, are several magnificent Byzantine churches. These valuable historic buildings have earned Ohrid a place among the Unesco World heritage sites since 1979.

Here is a larger version.

Two photos taken as I got closer to the Old town can be seen as workshops, one including a swan, the other mainly showing houses.

The approximate map coordinates for this photo are 41.111415, 20.801732.
