Photographer’s Note

This is not Croatia, not the Mediterranean. This is Lake Ohrid in Macedonia and the city of Ohrid, both classified by the UNESCO as a world heritage.

The large Lake Ohrid is shared by Macedonia and Albania. The city of Ohrid traces its history back to he 4th century B.C. and later became an important trade centre in the Byzantine empire. In the 9th century A.D. the first Slavic university was established here. The area was taken by the Ottoman empire in late 14th century.

Today Ohrid has become the most important tourist attraction in Macedonia. There are several famous Byzantine churches in the picturesque old town overlooking the scenic lake.
