Photographer’s Note

At the time I took this photo some women still wore their regional folk costumes, men had red or white fezzes (a strange sight when in Turkey the wearing of the fez ceased with Ataturk's reforms.) It was at this busy market that I enjoyed the juiciest, most flavoursome apple I had ever eaten.

Dedicated to my dear friend Çağla who appreciates the imprint of History.

The market scene was photographed in the town of Struga when the Albanian farmers came to town with their carts laden with produce.

The image is scanned from an old B&W film.

Ciao Caro Klaudio, the quality of this scan is impressive. I like the B&W which imports such timelessness and nostalgia. The vertical framing is great and you've captured a part of Daily Life that no longer exists, so the historical documentation to me is very important. Great title too. Un caro abbraccio, Lisa.

Hello Klaudio,
The sharpness and fine nuances of this scan are truly impressive. This is also a very interesting photo, documenting a life that is mainly gone.
I just returned from a journey through western Balkans, spending most time in Albania but also passing through Macedonia. At least in Albania some older women still dress this way, but they will certainly be the last traditional generation in that rapidly modernizing country.

The scanned shot from 30 years ago has turned out well. There is good tonality here from black to white.

Merhaba Klaudio, it is a big surprise to me, thank you very much. A beautiful image from the Balkans, with the land's typical local women. In the western coast villages of Turkey, women still tie their scarves in the same style as in this photo. Macedonia has been under the dominance of the Ottoman empire for more than 500 hundred years (until the first Balkan war, 1912). Borders may change, but habits hardly change. Thanks again for this warm and wonderful gift. Have a nice day.
