Photographer's Note

Samuil's Fortress (named after Samuel of Bulgaria) looms over Lake Ohrid and Ohrid town and offers some sublime views from its turrets. Samuel was the Tsar of the first Bulgarian Empire from 997 AD to 6 October 1014 AD and made Ohrid the first capital city. (The Bulgars conquered Ohrid in 867 AD)

"According to recent excavations by Macedonian archaeologists, it was contended that this fortress was built on the place of an earlier fortification, dated to the 4th century BC, which was probably built by King Philip II of Macedon." (source: Wikipedia)
