The Cathedral in the Citadel

Another photo from the Cittadella in the capital of Gozo, Victoria, with a view from the southern ramparts of the fortifications.

This is the Cathedral of the Assumption, seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gozo and dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. In Roman times, it was already the site of a temple dedicated to Juno, whose remains are still part of the present-day church. The temple was converted into a church following the Christianization of Malta and subsequently destroyed when the islands came under Arab rule. A new church was built at the end of the 13th century, but damaged in an earthquake in 1693, which led to the construction of the current Baroque church, designed by Lorenzo Gafà and completed in 1711.

I added an extra photo to the Workshop.
