City of Valletta has big height differences and some of it's streets are actually partly stairways.

This boy was not going upstairs or downstairs but across. Or more likely going nowhere, just enjoying ice-cream.

I had tough choice on how to frame the picture. Finally decided to go with simpler composition. In workshop a wider version showing a bit more of the place. Plus there's one bonus.

Hi Kari, very nice idea, interesting image

giorgio

Although filling the frame with the steps has worked well, I must say that I prefer the wider version in the workshop.
The crop has resulted in a degradation of image quality, but that's not really the reason I prefer the wide shot.
The main reason is that the wider framing gives all the details space to breathe. I like the light at the top of the frame that is missing in the cropped version, and the walls at either side put the image in context. The dog is also a nice detail, and it's a pity that you cropped him out.
So, my rating is for the WS version, it's a great shot.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Kari.

Nice picture with this little boy. A good background too to focus on him.

Well done!

Rgs, Oscar

Hello Kari,
Very artistic daily life scene. Excellent choice of framing too: I think this one is better than the wider view. Simplicity works.
TFS & have a nice day,
Erik

Dear kari
Me too ı like to take same kind of pictures. If you look my portfolio you can find sometin like this shoot in paris. Yours extremly amazing and eyecatching image with good color choice . Realy well done. my best regards. ihsan

I think you made the right choice when you went for the simple version here. I feel there is too much in the wider version when the horizontals of the steps and the magnificent light are all you need around the boy, who is placed well in the frame with space to walk into. I also like the doggie version.

Hi Kari
lovely light on a very interesting background, the boy shows up well and excellent timing here with him reaching out for the bite, seems delicious :) beautiful moment captured. but I personally prefer the WS, because more details of the surroundings could be seen.

singer on the stage :))
very interesting shot,thanks for sharing

Great dynamic in the boy balacing subconsiously, while consiously making sure that he is not gonna waste his icecream!
The irregularity of the pavers and the precarious balance
complement one another.

I like your selection Kari, tfs, Jay

Hi Kari,

A very nice photo. I prefer this simpler version, I like the details of the stone steps and the light coming down to frame the boy. You have composed and framed it well, and you have caught the boy in a great position. An excellent moment in time. Very well done.

Regards, Jackie

P.S. I also liked your shot of the dog on the steps. He is framed so well, with great light and interesting background, and he exudes character. Perhaps you could re-post him as a "real" photo. :-)

taken at the right time with a nice background...
Cheers
Yan

Excellent shot Kari! I prefer this one and, of course, the one with the dog. The one you posted give us an opportunity to concentrate on the boy savouring his icecream.
Regards, John.

Hi Kari,
Beautiful clever image of this young man in deep concentration on the best way to enjoy his ice cream. The wonderful old stone steps make a lovely background for this celebration of a tasty treat.
Regards, Tom

Excellent image Kari, compliments, great composition and excellent play with light and shadows, beautiful image indeed.
Have a nice week

Olá Kari, wonderful graphic capture, with a very beautiful lighting. I would usually go for this tighter crop, but somehow I enjoy more the wider view, may be because of the context of te boy going nowhere with his icecream. Also the repetition of the graphism is stronger and pleases me more. Thanks for the extra version with the dog ;-)
I wonder about the result of a b&w version...
Ricardo

Hello Kari! I had to open "Sideways" as it belongs to my favorite films ... Uhh, these stairs look pretty dangerous and seem to have no end going up. I like all versions you show, each one has its own special beauty. Excellent light management you had, with all the little shadows not an easy job I find. Kids and icecreams ... I bet he was too busy for anything else but enjoying the sweet cold. Barbara.

Hi Kari,
A very graphical shot and a good play withg the light that show just enough details of this boy and his ice cream... but not too much! I prefer this tighter crop where the silhouette seems lost amongst these stairs, just as the boy is lost in his thoughts and apparently totally unaware of your presence. The dog in the WS is cute too! ;o)
Regards, Brigitte

Brilliant capture Kari, that background is simply superb, it's also great that despite the angle of the light, the boy's face is not too dark.

Hello Kari,
very nice the background push forward the boy with the ice-cream.Excellent the direction of the light which is enough so as to throw it on stairways.Well done.

Kari,
Fine shot. Oddly, perhaps, those steps remind me of bamboo - only on the horizontal of course; this is interesting, I think, in that, given enough time, made made structures start to take on the appearance of natural forms. Hmmm.

Colin

Hello Kari,
this beautiful shot has got the most points compared to all your Malta-travelogue photos, and it´s worth every single one of it. I like it very much!

Elvira

Hi Kari. Great photo. This version works very well indeed. The simpler composition highlights the subject better. The backlight has bought out the texture of the stairs and made an excellent backdrop for the boy. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Kari,
Splendid impression. Very spectacular composition and superb cut. I like the particular and full of life atmosphere. This is a very good observation and excellent realization. Congratulations. Have a nice day, thank you
George

Hi Kari,
Light shining on the stone pavement is really exquisite. It is interesting that the reflected light changes from green into the magenta.
Sound composition with excellent timing.
Regards, Hisashi

Terve Kari,
Oh you go street shooting ? Nice scene well framed and you shot just right to have the light division fine and the boy in the light, actually I like the light use a lot here
Have a nice day JY
