Photographer’s Note

Along the Milena canal just outside Ulcinj in southern Montenegro this peculiar method for fishing is used. The nets are attached to rods and lifted when a shoal of fish is passing across them. The fishermen spend their days in the huts waiting for the shoals. According to Wikipedia the method is called by the Albanian word "kalamera", which should be translated roughly as "catching when passing by".
This fishing-method is also supposed to be found in southeast Asia. I have no idea how it ended up in this particular place in Montenegro.
Ulcinj, near the border with Albania, is dominated by ethnic Albanians and is also known as Ulqin.
