Photographer's Note

This idea of Aleksei, caused many photographers to be prepared at the same time the world over.

I meant to take a picture of my choir, rehearsing for J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion, for the concert that night, but .... we had a big break, and everybody went for some bread and soup. But actually, I'm very happy with the outcome, and I think this way it's a much stronger picture than a frame filled with people.

Bach's St. Matthew Passion is a wonderful piece of music, that deals with all kinds of human elements, like sadness, friendship, treason and love. The text and the way it's composed, offer consolation for the one who betrays his friend. (Petrus and the beautiful Aria: 'Erbarme dich').

Singing music of Bach, always gives me a lot of energy, I go to the rehearsal being tired, and come back with the batteries fully charged. Dance music all along, pure rythm and cadence!
I have sung the MP quite a few times, but this was the first time that we sang it with a (slightly extended) chamberchoir of 32 people instead of some 100. That was really great.
The orchestra that accompanies us here, is founded by our director and is formed per project. Both orchestra and choir consist of ardent and trained amateurs. The soloists are professionals.
Actually, this is a slice of my (sometimes) almost daily life, rehearsing two to three times a week, and quite a few concerts a year. This concert was great, and I had a very delightful evening.

Gal suggested that I should put a link to some fragments:
This fragment is from Monteverdi's 'Vespro della Beata Vergine', and this is the opening choir from J.S. Bach's 'Christmas Oratorio'. In both cases we were accompanied by professional orchestras on original instruments.
This is an 'a cappella' fragment from Francis Poulenc's '4 Motets pour un temps de Pénitence'.
