One hand on the handlebar, one eye on the road.
During my bike trip, after a while, with the camera in the handlebar bag, I couldn't help starting some experimenting, trying to capture my own shadow and a lot of motion blur on the road. Shouldn't be too difficult, as my shadow went as fast as I went ;-) This is the one I liked best, it was not easy, 1/25 second with only one hand for the camera.
So, this is the way I prefer to see my bike BTW, four bags + the handlebar bag for the camera, a tent, cooking stuff, and food for the day, or two days.
Biking in the Netherlands is quite fun, (mostly flat, except for the south), especially when you have a good description of where you want to go. We had, and we were led to the very rural areas of the Netherlands, often on small roads, no tarmac, just gravel roads. And although the Netherlands are very small and densily populated (482 on a square kilometer, Mongolia where I was last year: 1,7 per square kilometer), there are still many areas where it is rather quiet. Places to stay, campgrounds, are usually no problem, as many farmers are allowed to have a small campground. This is a development of the last 10-15 years, and nowadays a lot of farmers do nothing else anymore. Due to very strict regulations concerning the environment: only a certain amount of emission of ammonia, only allowed to produce a certain amount of milk (milk quota), many farmers just had to quit, sell most of their land, and the milk quota. So, many find this a great way to stay into some business somehow.
"I want to ride my bicycle". Song by the British Rockgroup Queen.
Converted to BW, curves, brightness and contrast, no cropping. I preferred to leave a bit of my leg and the left bag in the frame, others may have a different opinion.
Enjoy my bike ride!

Fantastic image Rinie!
excellent shadow image, with a great light and a wonderful noisy b/w!
great idea, and a great note too.
guliz (438) 2005-07-19 5:41
It's a interesting shot. I like it very much.
Excellent colors and sharpness...

Interesting shot.I like it.Great shadow.Good light and contrasts.Good note.Well done!
jinju (14265) 2005-07-19 6:01
Original. And I always like original concepts. A different way of showing the ordinary, scenes that are different among the sameness. This fits the bill. Nice way of putting a spin on the mundane. Excellent.
Coyotyto (1305) 2005-07-19 6:02
A very interesting experiment !! It shows perfectly the biking environment, but I'm not sure about your leg there, if I like it or not. Without any offense, of course, I'm just thinking if it should be included in the picture or not :o)
fab02 (51) 2005-07-19 6:08
I really like this photo, Rinie !
Originality, Quality and rapidity of the shot.
Very interesting movement.
sohrab (7439) 2005-07-19 6:17
ok this is pretty original, but somehow not involving asyour other fantastic shadow photograph here
because the one in the link has a story.. while this one is JUST a photograph of a shadow for me.. doesn't really get me to think or anything, the only thing that i can do is stare at it...
i think maybe a photograph without a motion blur would have been better here because atleast we'd get to see what kind of a road you were cycling on... or perhaps sometime later in the evening when your shadow would have been even more stretched out, you could have included a little bit of it ( i don't think including the whole scenery would have been possible) and a little of the place where you were cycling...
also about your leg... it's a good idea.. but maybe you should include a little more of it.. at the moment.. it's very little leg :)
hope i don't sound very mean or anything here
take care :)

Leuke foto!
MiguelP (14466) 2005-07-19 9:08
Nice to meet your shadow, it´s a step forward to find you in person some day... I´m not going to bla, bla, bla about compos, lights and so on becuause I think it´s more important the impression that the photo cause on me: It´s like a wanna go feeling, or in the mood for travel sensation, a sense of freedom. I love the effect created by the asphalt under you: Life passing by. You taked a risk doing this photo and you got it. I like it, no problem about the leg and I would like to see the color version.
baba_flies (8829) 2005-07-19 9:16
Good experiment ... it came out well, actually just great. I am never so inventive so I love to look at these "things".
Homerhomer (4080) 2005-07-19 9:42
I am a big fan of this shot Rinnie, think it's very well done, original and innovative form of autoportrait. Looks like you have a big beer belly;-)
Love the movement, choice of shutter is excellent, perhaps consider mor contrast so the greys are a bit more black, I personally would also crop off the bottom and right side, only to have the shadow in the frame.
KevRyan (22952) 2005-07-19 12:31
Brilliant Rinie - nicely creative and experimental yet still giving us a relevant message about cycling in the Netherlands - I like the composition as it is and wouldn't change a thing.
bertolucci (13356) 2005-07-19 12:42
Wow Rinie, lovely one - graphically conveying the sensation of motion and being on the road by bike. The inclusion of your leg and the handelbar bag was a good choice cause it adds depth and perspective. It's an exciting graphism which invokes strong memories of all the miles I biked this way with full caming gear. Congrats with this great job, hope you post some more in this vein and a very interesting note!
nwoehnl (122) 2005-07-19 15:05
Very nice and artistic result, Rinie. The crisp shadow outline against the effect of movement on the ground makes for a delightful result. Might also look good with much more contrast added. Creative shooting, well done. And thanks for providing the Queen song for the theme.
eleparc (24063) 2005-07-19 18:10
Hi rinie, nice experiment and quite a successful one...Lucky you did not fall over..haha! nice to see you back.;-)
Furachan (0) 2005-07-20 3:23
One of a kind shot - totally successful both on technical and (more importantly) aesthetic grounds. There's something very sweet here, harking back to images in early ne0-real Italian movies like De Sica's "Bicycle thief"...Love it, Francis
SophieL (6038) 2005-07-20 4:29
This is a great picture Rinie! I really like that ghost biker coming along the trip with you. I like that the shadow is so sharp while the road is blurred by the movement. It really makes me feel that it's me riding that bike and looking through your eyes.
Do you think it's something you would have noticed if you didn't have a camera? I often wonder if my way to look at things would be different if I didn't have an interest in photography...
As for the leg and the bag... I think I would have done without, but I'm not sure. Maybe more would have been better, but I'm not sure. So maybe you did the right choice! :^)
Isabelle (9046) 2005-07-20 8:29
Very nice, Rinie! I am with Miguel in this one, "I wanna go too" the feeling is really nce, pure joy, and yes, the color version would be fine too, although in such a case real leg would strand a bit too much perhaps. this photo is good with/without the real leg :)
tfs (i´ll be on vacation on august 1st ;))) yessss (then i´ll see my brother!)
spence (65) 2005-07-20 8:56
Interesting and original idea, Rinie. I'm glad you kept at least one eye on the road! I really like the crop you've made here, and I think the real leg provides an extra dimension that works well. And you've almost convinced me to search the garage for my ancient bicycle...
erdna (5711) 2005-07-20 20:19
Very nicely done but that knee wants to be part of the picture!
danielswalsh (13593) 2005-07-21 5:14
Welcome back "Rinnie"!
Dare I say, I think I missed seeing you on TE. How was trip to Brazil!?!?!
You made me really jealous of the shot of Iguasu. Very fond memories- and I look forward to the day I can return!
I never realised you were such a fan of the outdoors, you really go all out.
Interesting take on your bike trip, surely not your typical photo. Very imaginative.
All the best, and welcome back Rinie;
nerve (10231) 2005-07-21 6:25
Good experiment.. just reminded me my days in Holland..i really miss my biking times through a beautiful flat landscape over there.. :)
Nice idea to convert it to b/w as well..
Well done, cheers.
bnallama (3763) 2005-07-21 17:28
Rinie, simply fanstastic.... very nice experimental shot... from city of bikes :-)) I will try to post some from my recent trip to Netherlands.... See you around and thanks for your visit.. Bala
Rockyboy (20598) 2005-07-21 19:17
Excellent this idea and also very dutch... You have courage to fiets with all those bags... About the picture, I like very much all those lines due to the motion. Very well done!
Michael_Gan (2776) 2005-07-22 4:47
Hi Rinie, very nice and successful experiment. Most of the people try to capture speed and movement by panning a moving object while standing in a static position. You are showing us another way how to do it and the result is very dynamic. I like the B&W here.
weswang (18223) 2005-07-22 10:35
Hi Rinie, A very dare shot. An excellent dynamic picture. I like the feeling of the movement provided in this picture. To me, it likes a abstract painting, an impression drawing, and some dreaming alike motion :D
Nice shot. I have read enough about your leg. Not comment from me about it for now :D
oochappan (22043) 2005-07-22 14:17
Werkelijk inspirerend shot perfect afgewerkt Rinie.
gaby (19819) 2005-07-22 16:45
Hi Rinie, fantastic shadow - very great - I like a lot -
pamastro (7218) 2005-07-23 11:52
You were very brave to get this. I'm afraid to even carry my camera should I hit one of our large cracks or pot holes and fall. But roads, paved or unpaved are probably far better maintained there than here. The result is really neat. Before I read it i was figuring out just what it was. I saw the silhouette but the way you photographed your shadow makes it look more like a wood etching. The overexposed ground and streaking lines give it a wood like grain. And just the contrast makes it look like stained wood. Perhaps even more contrast would have added to it. And perhaps a crop of the bottom and cloning out the bit of bag on the right. But neat idea and well done.
everlasting (14303) 2005-07-24 3:31
Well done, what a great result! The image that the note conjurs up brings a smile to my face. I'm glad you didnt fall off :)
Biding my time in KL airport catching up with TE.........
coco (30437) 2005-07-25 17:39
This one remembers me my bike. Really I believe that I could not do something like this: when I am with my bike I am more interested in find mountains that in make a photo of my own shadow (but when I ride my bike, my camera is always with me).
Anyway, much more than suggerent.
ElSato (824) 2005-07-25 21:06
Boy, when you go "graphic" you really go all the way! A very beautiful abstract which has the added charm of looking at first glance like it has been subjected to some PS tool but -- no, it's real life!
(That, by the way, is one reason I would respecfully disagree with Peter about cropping it so that only the shadow is there... there is a nice surprise when you think you're looking at something heavily processed and then suddenly see that bit of unblurred image and realize that you're wrong!)
The other thing that's nice about it is that it's exactly the type of thing we all do with our cameras at one time or another (especially when we first get them and are taking pictures of everything): try some odd, unusual shot that we think might look cool. Then we look at it on the computer and it looks like crap most of the time. Well for all the times that I've tried such things and seen them turn out as junk, it's wonderful to see you succeed and turn a little experiment into a really great image. Although now that you've encouraged me I'll NEVER be able to stop with the improbable experiments and shall always envy you your results ;)
Fixfocus (9385) 2005-07-27 4:27
Very graphic and artistic composition! It looks very dynamic,B/W was shure the best choice.I like it a lot!
Porteplume (3393) 2005-07-27 10:36
Nou zit het de heeeeele dag in m'n hoofd "I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my biiiiiiiike..." :o)
Nice idea, good sensation of mouvement [you're faaaaast Rinie!!!] - Ik zou toch de onderkant hebben ge-cropped. Qu'en penses-tu?
Greetings - Amitiés - Regards etc...

Hi, I like it very much. I've tryed several times to take a picture of my shadow but never did a job like you. TFS

Hi Rinnie, just back from a trip myself, which, guess what, included some cycling in Holland, stayed in Venray on the way back from Lithuania, and joined in a local cycle tour, may post later. Anyway, very clever inventive shot, nice thing to come back to after a break.
ChrisJ (94532) 2005-08-05 10:33
A superb b&w, with excellent use of blur to convey movement, & with a good tonal range. Congratulations!
avigur_11 (22069) 2005-08-11 13:26
Hi Rinie, I am back..
This is a great compo and a great idea. The minimalist colors, the dynamic lines that create the strong feeling of motion and the white BG create a very interesting scene.
B/W is a perfect choice, for sure.
