Photographer's Note
Meet Jens Maersk
This graphical ensemble is shot exactly amidships of the Jens Maersk, operated by the Danish Maersk shipping company. It’s a container ship which can hold some 2900 units.
It was, and by the time I write this, is still moored in Katendrecht in the Maashaven (Maas docks) after a paint job, the removal of her crane and the fitting of new lashings at a Rotterdam ship yard.
On top we see a part of the giant letter “L” from Maersk Lines (the trading name of the combined Maersk Sealand and P&O Nedlloyd businesses). I have seen the signs and numbers below it many times before but didn’t now the exact meaning. Some Googling learned me what’s what.
From left to right we see the D - L sign first. This sign (the “D” is for draught “L”is for line) indicates the position of the waterline while the ship is fully loaded. After that is the density sign, to correct the D – L level for the different types of water. Fresh water (the “F” on the scale) exerts less upwards pressure, so in fresh water the ship rides deeper in the water. In the winter due to the lower temperatures this effect is reversed (the “V” on the scale).
After that is the moulded depth scale, showing the vertical distance from the top of the keel to the top of the upper deck beam at side. When we combine the D-L line with the moulded depth scale, we see that while fully loaded, 12,2 m of Jens Maersk is below the waterline. The ship was empty, so now only 6,8 m was submerged.
These signs give a reliable and easy indication if a ship is overloaded, for reference of the crew and the harbour authorities.
In the WS is a wider view of the ship.
Some more information about it:
IMO-NR 9215177. Flag: Denmark. Manager: Maersk Line. Built in 2001 by Volkswerft Stralsund GmbH, Deutschland. Propulsion: MAN B&W 7L70 MC - performance 19,8 MW. Max. Cruising speed: 21,6 Kn. Length: 207,4 m. Breadth: 29,8 m. Draught 12,2 m . Number of containers: 2833. DWT: 33.855.
The usual PCS2 tech: cropped, altered the contrast, saturation, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, USM-ed , added a frame and saved for the web.

Hi Bert,
Great imaginative and creative eye catch in a resulting photo artwork design in a graphical emsemble. Very well balanced for composition in a fine enquadrement view with these nice contrasting colors and writing texts. Good guideline notes and a nice work of a detal from the boat that you captured so well. Very well seen and composed. Congratulations and have a nice week.
PS: I send the e-mail and I would also know about Maritime Hotel just near the Meeting.
All the best to you
Fernando

Hallo Bert,

Hi Bert,
Amazing hues and graphics. The shot resembles a modern painting. Your framing and tight cropping ensures high impact. A very fine note complements. Very well done, Bert.

C'est le genre de photo qui me plaît. Arriver à ce résultat avec si peu de moyens c'est ce qu'on apelle la créativité. Excellent !

This is very well seen, Bert, and wonderfully cropped for maximum effect. Great strong colours. Modern art, Abstract, Graphic - whatever you call it, it works for me. Your workshop shot is pretty impressive too.

Good eye to catch this detail on the big ship - and not least a perfect note to go with it.
Ending result interesting, almost graphical in this setting.

Hallo Bert,
Vreemd dat Lars nog niet is langs geweest bij dit fraaie Deense plaatje. Niet zo spectaculair als de opera die deze macenas in Kopenhagen heeft laten bouwen, maar toch van een boeiende eenvoud en schoonheid.
Goede week toegewenst, Rob

Hej Bert,
Prachtig werk!
Groeten,
Lars

Again a nice detail that you caught for us. Something that we all can relate to, but still at least I never thought of taking that shot.
Thanks,

Yeah, I got your wider workshop photo somewhere on a photo too, when I came home, and took a detour along the Parkkade ;-)). It was such a huge ship, lying there in Katendrecht!
Great graphic picture, Bert, a very nice combination of lines, colors and outdoor types.
Nice series!

Hi Bert,
i will always have a soft spot for such subjects...coming from seamen family i have even indulged myself to study ship engineering for some time...and used to know how to read those marks so your note helps me to get some of this knowledge back...nice, neat & very graphical, an interesting subject and a perfect approach...cheers, regards

Bert, impressive that you manage to take an interestign photo out of an ordinary object.
But, if you want to get something even bigger... try to get to Maasflakte on Sept. 13 when the world's biggest Emma Maersk will berth.
