Photographer's Note

This photo is taken on the Afsluitdijk in the direction of Harlingen. You can see the harbor in the far end.
This photo is taken almost a year ago, a week ago we just had snow storms, a year ago it was wonderful weather, warm and sunny.

The Afsluitdijk is made for two reasons, one was that the then called Zuiderzee was in direct contact with the open sea, so closing this one will protect the safety of the hinterland against the advance of the water. The second reason was that it is now much easier to reclaim land from the Zuiderzee. The Zuiderzee is called IJsselmeer after the construction of the Closure-Dike.

May 28, 1932 The last opening of the Closure-Dike at the Vlieter is closed.
January 23, 1933 The Closure-Dike is completed and is opened on a limited basis for toll traffic.

September 23, 1954 Queen Juliana unveils the statue of Cornelis Lely.
May 29, 1968 The last polder, Zuidelijk Flevoland, falls dry. The partial reclamation of the Zuiderzee yields 165,000 hectares of new land.
