Springtime in Holland

To celebrate the start of the new season with you, a short, one picture return to Holland with this capture of the Chabot museum in the Museum Park in Rotterdam, flanked by trees carrying fresh young leaves and together with the gradual rise in temperature flagging the start of the spring…..…..at last.

In this museum, dedicated to the Dutch sculptor and painter Henk Chabot, the “Een Hollandse Lente” (A Dutch Spring) exhibition has just started. This exhibition showcases the work of Chabot after the second World War. In this period he painted many brightly coloured spring and summer landscapes, hence the title. Highly recommended. Chabot Museum.

The building itself is in a way also a reference to spring. It was designed in 1938 by Baas and Stokla from the architects firm of Brinkman & van der Vlugt and can be classified as functionalist or belonging to ‘Het Nieuwe Bouwen’, or ‘The International Style”, for many the spring of architecture. When you look carefully you can see that the top floor of the museum is a more recent addition (1976) – the materials used are modern and the style used is a more contemporary one.
Brinkman & van der Vlugt also designed the famous Van Nelle factory, depicted by Jaap here.

PCS tech: corrected for some perspective distortion (not all this time); cropped; saturation, contrast and levels adjusted; USM-ed , added a frame and saved for the web.

Hi Bert, welcome back to Spring, your last post of Lisboa was already warm. Nice, celever and very creative to spot on Spring comeback this way indeed. Thanks for the link, I've just taken a look. I'm unfortunately not cultured enough in architecture to notice the top addition without your remark. But what I can notice, well just my own feeling, is that there is a quite sterile effort in adding curves to the sqaured construction. It seems that there is a real difficulty in creating something else than lines and angles. Something that, IMO, is much more feasible for a Museum than for a living house. Thanks for sharing Spring start that way Bert.

What a great building in functionalis/bauhaus style with typical combination of round and square shapes. I like how the hedge repeats the soft shape of the balcony. Springtime tones of green add an atmosphere of 1930´s. I like the graphic design of the text in the window, too. Very well chosen POV. Thanks a lot of sharing – I´ll add this great shot to my bauhaus/functionalism group theme...

Yo Bert! Pleasant springtime picture, the leaves are nice to look at, I'm really longing for spring. And although it was not really warm this morning yet, the light and the sun are great.
Fine, smooth picture of the Chabot museum, I like this architectural style very much, the beautiful round form of the balcony and the roof, are very nice.
Actually, I still haven't been there, it's about time to go and take a look.
(I think there's again this pinkish cast. Is it me? Or do I have a pinkish feeling. Did spring arrive for me too? ;-)

Dag Bert,

Gr. Jaap

Fine capture of this beautiful piece of architecture,Bert!
Good compo with well chosen pov and nice diagonal lines. The trees on both sides "framing it",are a nice detail.
Goed werk!

Great Bauhaus-style architecture in this one, Bert. The typical combination of straight and curved lines makes the building quite appealing, and your compo shows it nicely as it is embedded amidst the early springtime greenery. Nice and crisp detail present all across the frame.

Well made compo of this 'funkis' style building, typical for the periode of late 30's. Clean, simple shot, perfect of the 'style'...

Bonjour Bert!
Such a pleasant architecture picture, also sharp and well framed, could stand in the museum guide.

It makes me want to go out, "het is lente!" and also, toegeter with your excellent note, makes me want to get right to Rotterdam again for discovering the musea this spring. Wish I got more time or occasions to do that more often...

It's a sleek looking building. I really like them. I recently purchased a book of art deco in Detroit that has a whole bunch of homes of which I have so far found 2. The point of view is ecellent for catching both the return of spring and the building. Somehow its sleek lines match the surroundings. And the later addition actually works very well with the older part. The point of view also allows a nice perspective that I think is good for these types of buildings as the lines were playing to that kind of view. There does seem to be a cast as has been mentioned but it could also just be the way the light was at that time of day. But it's certainly well captured architecture.
