Photographer’s Note
The day after our visit to the shipyard of the Batavia was our last day in Amsterdam. As usual for the closing of the meeting, there has been a naval parade of the ships in the harbor, before a long cruise in the canals to reach the sea. To start the Parade, here is the replica of the Amsterdam, a nice view after visiting the Batavia in building, since it gave an idea of what Batavia would look like, except that Amsterdam was based on a 18th century model whereas the Batavia is one century older, a different style of ship design.
This side view gives a good idea of the tall masts, already rather flat deck (when Batavia was to have a higher poop), and still very round hull shape. Some gundoors of course even for a marchant ship, as a protection against pirates and privateers. And the different flags, the VOC at the fore mast and the Dutch flag (the United Provinces) on the mizzen mast. Between them, a very long and narrow flag, probably the equivalent of the "flamme de guerre" on the French Navy vessels, which lentgh is proportional to the time of sea service...
In workshop, another one taken after the ship has passed before us.

If it wasn't for the buildings and boats around, I'd be asking how the hell did you get to take a picture from the past! Very good choice of object, and great framing - I wish it could've been a little closer, though..

Hello Emmanuel,
Great title for a great photo. The ship reminds me of the Vasa (in Stockholm), but the Vasa two rows of gun ports, and was much top heavy. The note is excellent, as usual.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Salut Emmanuel, belle réplique de ce vieux trois mâts, ce doit être gay de naviger sur un tel vaisseau. Amitiés.
