Photographer’s Note

The oldest tracks go back to the 10th century. Zierikzee started as an empty space near a creak
called the `Ee`. Farmers and fishermen build some houses. Zierikzee, on the southside of the island, was a safe place for big storms and floods. The creak the `Ee` was connected with in that time, an important sea intersection between Holland and Vlaanderen (Belgium) called the `Gouwe´.
On the east was Antwerp and it was situated between the islands Schouwen and Duiveland. There is a story about how Zierikzee got it´s name. One of the first commanders of Zierikzee must have been a certain `Zierik´, so the `Ee was from Zierik`.
Out of that came the name Zierikzee....
