[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
In 1985 (and I think it was June) I went to Curaçao to see Halley's Comet. Unfortunately, the comet's tail had broken a little before, plus there was a high sandstorm from the Sahara making a haze at 30,000 feet or so, so while I saw a bit of a blur, I couldn't tell if you that was the comet or a spot of dust. (And yes, I know comets are mostly dust.)

However, I did get to explore Curaçao, including the capital city of Willemstad, where one can find Congregation Mikve-Israel Emmanuel, the oldest congregation in the western hemisphere (since 1651) still functioning. As far as I know, this is the original building, though there have been some modifications and extensions.

The synagogue bimah (platform where the Torah is read) is in the center of the sanctuary, which is typical of the Sephardic (Spanish) tradition. The bimah has a brass ornament at each of the four corners, one of which is the focus of this picture. Reflected in the brass you can see the blue windows on the wall, and if you look carefully, you can see the floor, which is covered with sand, in memory of the Exodus (there is another interpretation that says it dates back to the days of the Inquisition, when Jews in Spain and Portugal covered the floors with sand to hide the sounds of shuffling during secret worship. See here.)
