Casey Stoner
Every year on the last Saturday in June the Dutch TT is held on the circuit at Assen. That day is visited by more than 100.000 people and most of the time we see spectacular racing in different classes. This year the weather was not perfect, heavy overcast skies, 3 dots of rain and 0,5 seconds of sunshine.
The man we see here is Casey Stoner, a boy from down under and at this moment the fastest man on the track. Riding in the MotoGP he won the race on his Ducati Desmosedici without any competition....flawless and superb riding..!!!
The little black thing you see on his back is a tiny camera which most of the riders have these days.
There is not that much editing here, the tilt is there because i tilted my camera on purpose to create a more speedy effect and further more some saturation, contrast and sharpness. These editing also goes for the one in the workshop.
For this one i used my Manfrotto monopod, the panning version is handheld.

The new 1Ds mkIII is not made for this kind of work. The focustracking is superb, But the shutter speed can't hardly catch up comparing to the real sport machines like the 1D mkII and the 1D mkIII. Nikon shooters were of course happy with their ultra fast D3. The 1Ds mkIII is not made for this kind of work and that showed. I had to work harder than in previous years to get things right in the way i wanted them.
Here i used the 300m/m with 2 x extender which makes 600m/m and make things really difficult looking through the lens. The speed is extremely high and you have to work very concentrated to get things right.

Last year i promised Nikki a photo from her Australian hero Casey Stoner with number 1 on his bike. Hope this one is good enough ;-).

There is another one in the first workshop which shows that real fast panning is possible with keeping high sharpness.

For all those who don't like this kind of work but like to see things that are also along the track (Andre :P), there is a second workshop which maybe have a more interested pov for them ;-)

Hi Henk,
What a fantastic photo! the kind I can, as yet, only dream of every taking. Superb clarity, composition and colours. The tilted angle only adds to the image and the different bands of colours in the background make this a truly professional shot.
Well done, and thanks for sharing!
Regards
Lee

Hello my friend,
Even if I understand the 1DS is not the best for this kind of execice, I must say that I have seen worse ;-)
And the result is outstanding and, as always, with a very professional rendering. A pity that the light has not been better but the quality of this shot is really impressive. The panning is just perfect and makes it all.
Great picture, I must say that the workshop have got their own interest as well :o))
Have a nice day.

dag henk,
rumour was that you'll shoot some sports again (and show some pro panning), therefor i was waiting for this one ;o)
... flawless indeed, not a rebel pixel in there - a true panning lesson! thank you for the informative note, too.
bw,
dora

Salut Henk,

LOL!!!

Hi Big Guy!

So you don't understand a word??? After all these meetings, you still don't speak French? I know, as soon as you read this comment, you'll fill up my page with words with double A's... :-P)

Well, all I was saying is that even if the MarkIII is not geared for sport scenes, you've done what it takes to get it in the can as usual... Nikki will be pleased, and so am I.

Did you shoot it with one hand in your pocket while looking behind your back?... :-P)

Terrific catch Dutch Boy!

André

P.S.: Next time, I would prefer a blonde version please... :-P)

Hi Henk,
Extra - intense speed - it is completed - Fantastic shot -
congratulations
best regards

Dag Henk,
My preference for your WS1 (the second one, she is too pretty ;-) for the impression of speed, and the way the line departs from the exact corner of your composition.
Well, it seems you had a great time there and could bring wonderful photos. Nikki will be happy!!
XXX Marianne

Hoi Henk,
Fulvio.

Hi Henk,

Not my type of photography but a very nice and well composed picture. The bike is well in focus leaving the background to create the effect of speed very well. The colours are bright and properly saturated so as to make the image look natural. The workshop image is very pleasant to see; talking about the 2nd workshop mainly ;-) Thanks Henk.

Roberto

actually I'm not interested in this kind of picture but something make me open it and can't help to give you a compliment .
I like bright colors of background contrast to subject in red .the diagonal lines give sense of speed very well as well as sharpness of subject make him and his decoration outstanding from background that make this picture interesting.
TFS

it is just perfect Henk!!!!

nice capture

very difficutl thing to do!!
congrats

Hi Henk

Great shot, super sharpness and colours, you really caught a sense of speed on this.

Andy

Hello Henk,

How can i miss this one ??
My friend ! What a picture ! Casey seems to show out from the picture ! I love this kind of shot full of dynamism.
How many photography do you have made to reach such a perfection in the panning ?
The sharpness is very good on the motorbike.
Very amazing ! I love this one !
You did a very good job !

A+

Dominique

Speed Master! Great sharpness and very nice color lines. Superb Henk.

Sothy

Good on yer, Henk!

True to your word - a great shot of 'our' Casey Stoner doing what he does best: riding a Duke to perfection and victory! I've seen some of your other Moto GP shots, too - all superb!

Thanks, mate!

When I saw Assen on TV on Saturday I said to Rob "I bet Henk is there with his big white lens!" Seems I was right.;D Are you sure Nikki wanted a photo of Casey Stoner riding his bike? Why not after the race with his leathers rolled down to his waist and a bottle of Fosters in his hand?! (Two can play the sexist game! :D)
Seriously you certainly know how to pan and where to stand to catch the best shot. No point in saying to you "Good shot". You know that already! Technically excellent: twee punten.
Kath

Hi Henk
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
It's superb. I love the first workshop too.
The tilt and graphical lines are excellent and the colours stand out so well too. Doesn't matter that it wasn't sunny. It would have been unbearable with the 30°C we have here.
I missed the final 5 laps as we had to take a group of boys to play minigolf (Mikel's birthday party) but as he was far in front, I was confident he'd stay on his bike.
Thanks again.
Regards
Nikki

Hi Henk,
I see you take complimentary mission assignments, I'll start building my wish list :)
The tilt here makes the sport look even more hazardous, accident waiting to happen. Diagonal lines look great. Sunshine would give even better highlights. Aussie flag onn the number 1 is interesting detail.
Kari

Hi Henk,

it's not the fisrt excellent panning and I'm sure it will not be the last one! Two things make me fell amazed: the sharpness/focus and the well chosen tilt for the dynamism. Great!
Regards,
Carlos

Hi Henk,
That's a dream day for Nikki, you post an image from her hero and Spain wins the euro !
I prefer this one to the WS version because seing him from the face and so up close gives the impression he's about to land on my desk, I find also nice that most of him is over the green background, it adds to the luminous impression compared to the grey.
Have a nice day JY

I think this is great work. Great composition and colours.

Great shot! I was in Holland recently but not for the bikes, maybe next year! Your picture has prompted me to post one of my own bike shots also shot on a 1D, but a mkII

Hi Henk,
panning with 1/500 ! There are only two persons in the world who are that fast..Casey and you :)
Compliments, Chris

Hallo Henk,
Jij hebt in ieder geval weer knap werk geleverd!
Groetjes,
Vanessa

hello Henk
this is a perfect shot, the motorbike is superbly placed, and the impression of speed is great with an excellent panning !And the colours, red on green, are superb!Very well done!I think I prefer this one than the WS1 because of the diagonal of the lines, and the WS2 is reallly nice too!
Regards.
Pascale

Hi Henk,
Great result with this panning, very dynamic, colourful and more with a diagonal for the composition, all is good, bravo !

difficult to make better shot than this one, even f you are not completely happy with your 1Ds Mark III, I'd like to succeed in such a photo.

.It`s an excellent exposure with fantastic colors and contrast and sharpness.

Hello Henk,
I have no idea on how you managed to follow this kind of missiles on two wheels, but everytime you present this kind of shot is something amazing to look at; of course the camera is important and all the technicals aspects but the photographer is the one who can really make the difference. The colours are simply amazing, with that vibrant red shining and dominating the scene. What I like the most is compo and the diagonal you created, simply stunning!
Thank you and regards,

Igor

Excellent, excellent panning on this motorcycle shot. Looks great at 1/500th... a very nice amount of motion blur.

Hi Henk,
A great capture - sharp as a tack and the colors are so vivid and brilliant. Sure stopped this guy in his tracks. TFS. Gerald

Henk,
you don't need a D3. Even with a camera that supposedelly isn't done for such shooting you do better than most of those that have a D3! No kidding!
It is hard believe that there you where with the heavy camera and the even more heavy lens and extender reaching for 600mm focal lenght and doing flawless panning. I wonder if you do some heavy work out during the three preceeding months of this race to be at top form to lift easily 30kg and hold it for several hours without the slightest tremor. The main post as well as the WS (the one with the bike) are sharpest. Well, the other WS is just to make certain people at TE tremble, but not you ;-)

This insn't my kind of sport, but I can still certainly enjoyed and appreciate this excellent image. It's hard to composed the objects that is on the move, especially that fast, but you absolutely nailed it at the perfect moment. You composition is right on with diagonal lines paving the way for the rider to follow, nearly out of the image. My complements.

Hola Henk.
A perfect panning shot, you need a very special seat or place to take this kind of shot, even you got your 300m/m converting to 600m/m with 2 x extender it's impossible to catch such perfect shot without been in the perfect spot in the race. This one and your WS are very good but as I don't fallow this type of race I prefer the WS with the beautiful girl(LoL).
Well done my friend.

Hi Henk,
We all know that you are the panning king aournd here and I'm sure you could manage the same result with a compact camera like the G9 (who needs a 1Ds MkIII ?). :-P
Both this and and WS1 photo are really high quality and I must say I like both of them equally. Nikki must be really happy with this present and it's also nice of you to have posted a present for André as well! ;o)
Have a nice day.

Henk
JJ

You're really a pro, no doubt about it. All three photos are perfect. As I don't like bikes that much, I like the pit girl :), but these reds are too good to let go. But what amazes me is the perfect sharpness you get on your panning shots. From end to end. I couldn't never do this... You could sell those to a moto magazine to put as a poster.

BoisBarb

Many WoWs for this one, Henk. Again. I'm not a fan of this sport, but I can sure admire such impressive pictures from a professional as you are. This is the most pleasing compo for me, but the WS2 is big fun as well :)) And you tought me that panning is low shutter speed... ;-)
Regards,
ric

Hello Henk,
Great action picture!
The quality is amazing.
Greetings.
Igor

Wow! a cracking shot Henk. You must have panned this shot which makes it even more impressive even the sharpness. Excellent work..

Hi Henk
You panning worked perfectly here. The biker is tack sharp and the colours are bold.
Phil

Dag, Henk.

Hello Henk -

Spot on image! Sharpness where it belongs, blurring where it belongs, but the colors look like that wonderful Fuji film. The odd camera angle gives this scene some extra motion or is it "dynamic tension" to make it jump off the screen. I don't know if it is just me, but from this image I can hear the whine of the bikes and can smell the exhaust. Top marks for this one Henk!

Dag Henk,

Groeten! Dennis

Hi Henk,
wow man, what a panning shot! As you know I love panning and this one is really, really great! I never did panning with such fast objects, so therefore I closely study your exif data, wow 1/500s, that was fast! I love your crop, the colors and the background, there`s nothing disturbing here like a big advertisment in the background, really a nice job! How did you manage to get such a shot, I don`t think they let you stand on the side of the racetrack, do they? A perfect shot, you are the master of panning, I would also love to have such a shot in my collection!

Take care
Mark

this is not only about speed... the color palette, the diagonal compo and the technical quality are all in combination to create a piece of art... well, no surprice...

all the best henk...

Hello Henk!
Wooow, what a fantastic panning shot! With 1/500s and 600m/m, I can´t believe this, it must be so difficult to keep good sharpness, but you just managed this perfectly.
The red Ducati Desmosedici (now no more Honda or Aprilia...) is a real eye catcher, the red color is fantastic. Congratulations for his victory in 2007 and also for your shot (*).

Hi, Henk -

This is a superb panning shot! The clarity is perfect, the diagonals line up, the center positioning is in place - all the elements, and at that speed! You can feel the rider leaning into the turn, too.

Gee you have the perfect focus here the equipment is mastered and perfectly used to bring this scane out. Undoubtedly this picture could be used by Canon to promote their products.
Clever composition, you had it my friend, you waited for it, its not a lousy shot hoping for the best.

Bravo Henk!

This is a photo I'd like to shoot myself. You adjusted the cadrage perfectly and Casey looks sharp and crisp among those blurry lines. However much I like Stoner (he is an amazingly talented, very cute boy), I feel devastated when Rossi cannot come first. I desperately want him to be this year's champ; he hasn't been the champion for the last two years, you know and I believe he still deserves it what with his incredible talent at competing with faster ducatis, his positive attidute no matter what and his technique. Pedrosa has more points at the moment, which pisses me off. He is a good rider, but I don't like him. (Because of him, Hayden fell two years ago and I still remember this.) Who do you support? Lorenzo is a good kid, too.

Hello Henk:

A spectacular image, sharp, beautiful colors and perfect frame.

I love the dynamism offered at this stage, is a shot of speed and opportunism

Hello Henk,
"Hope this one is good enough"?! If it is not good enough for someone, I would be very chocked!
The sharpness of the panning is absolutly impressive. How do you manage?
Estelle

Hello Henk,
panning is one of your strenghts...it's easy to see here...But you show another of your strenght: composition. The motorcycle is perfectly framed by those layers of colors. Grey, white, green, green, grey, grey. And the red of the suit/moto. It pops out perfectly!! I'm a sucker for action/sports shots. I know how important it is to find an important moment and action to show all the dynamism in the sport. This is astonishing. I'm sure that at full res you can see the eyes of the rider

Imagine what you could do with a Nikon...;)

question from a newbie: the reason why you can do a panning at 1/500 is that you are at such a long focal lenght?

Marc
