[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Veteran's Day in the Netherlands is a day to give all Dutch veterans the acknowledgement and respect they deserve - from the government as well as Dutch society.
The white carnation is a symbol for respect and acknowledgement for our veterans.

Give them a smile and you'll get a smile back!
Well, most of the time. Some of the veterans put on their most serious face. I thought that sometimes Í even saw pain in their eyes, remembering everything they have been through in the field.
A touching example can be found in the workshop.

Technical note:
During Veteran's Day, I stuck to my 105mm f/2.0 DC lense. Rear defocus f/2.0, creating wonderful bokeh.

This photograph is part of my theme "Portraits by Dennis (Europe)".

hi dennis,
no doubt that people like this gentleman deserve our attention, as photographers... if they can pay us back with a smile - great! what else can be more precious than this?....
very good portrait...
respect,
j.

Hallo Dennis,

Goed werk.
jan

Hi Dennis,
You could capture two different expressions.
The result of your post combined with the WS, is that we experience a wide range of feelings, also on reading your note.
Congratulations for this.
Cheers,
Marianne
PS : great bokeh... this is the one I am dreaming about ;-)

Salut Dennis,
Marc

Salut Dennis,
I like a lot the smile you caught here.
This one could be used for so many veteran's days over the world... Perhaps with a message for enjoying life :o)
Again nice use of the DC lens.
Regards,
JB.

I think this is my favourite of your three Veteran's Day portraits. I love the natural smile and the detail of the white carnation. (is that signifiant?)The DOF is perfect as there is nothing showing in the background to disturb.
Well done
Kath

Hello Dennis
A very fine portrait with that exceptional lens...I see even the right shoulder has become OOF, so precise is the focussing on his face & his warm smile. The light is not ideal as it appears to fall from his back, but the details you've got is excellent. Fine, fine portrait!
Best Wishes
Angshuman
