Bryggen, also known as Tyskebryggen (Norwegian for German Wharf) is an ensemble of Hanseatic commercial buildings lining the eastern side of the fjord coming into the city of Bergen, Norway, and as such was the heart of medieval Bergen. As it is the only remaining ensemble of wooden buildings illustrating the medieval Hanseatic architecture, Bryggen is on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites. The city of Bergen was founded in 1070 and was the capital of Norway until 1299 when it was replaced by Oslo but remained Norway's largest city until the 1830s. In 1360 one of the four Kontoren (offices) of the Hanseatic League was established there (the other three were in London, Brugge, and Novgorod), and the town developed into an important trading centre. The administrative buildings of Bryggen housed clerks from many areas, especially Germany. The warehouses were filled with goods, particularly fish from northern Norway, and cereal from Europe.

Because most of the houses were wooden, Bergen has experienced many fires throughout history, and this is despite the strict safety regulations: no heating and lighting was allowed in a house neither was any cooking done on the premises. This was also the case for Bryggen, and as of today, around a quarter dates back to the time after 1702, when the older wharfside warehouses and administrative buildings burned down. The rest predominantly consists of younger structures (as parts of Bryggen were destroyed by fire in 1955), although there are some stone cellars that date back to 15C.

To respect the Sunday TE tradition, there is also a church in the frame, its towers can be seen behind the houses. It's Mariakirken of 12C; as it was built from stone and therefore was spared the destruction in the fires, it's today the oldest building in Bergen. It's a rare example of Romanesque architecture in Norway and was used by the Hanseatic merchants as their parish church.

Bergen is one of the most humid places in Europe, it rains there 300 days a year on average, so we were lucky with even some sun shining through the clouds.

Hello Alexander,
A good point of view for this composition, where the colourful houses stand out well against otherwise rather sombre tones occasioned by the overcast sky. Very good detail in the architecture and the little boats dotted along the quayside.

interesting contrast as the fronts of the houses are sunlightened, and the mount in BG is in the shade,
the framing please me very much... and to balance it completly, i like the detail of the birds in top left hand side
regards
jo

Very good light and framing; May be the backround a bit too dark, but it's a very intersting photo

Bonjour Alexander
Un très bel éclairage sur ces maisons colorées à l'architecture si particulière au pays.
C'est du bon travail - merci pour le partage et bon dimanche.
Nicole

H Alexander,
architecture of these buildings is interesting.Beautiful natural colors and details. Very interesting note,
Georg

The gaily coloured wooden buildings stand out in the image thanks to a small glimpse of sun, as the background is well and truly in the shadows. The diagonal of the mountain slope works well in the composition. The reflections and the gulls of your title are added elements of interest. Good work
Kath

nice colours

Hallo Alexander,
Groet, Henk

Hi Alexander,

Their colorful facades are stunning in your frame. Repeating red roofs, boats and reflections on water are creates great ambiance there and you captured them perfectly in natural colors and sharpness. Congratulations.

Best Regards,

Ertugrul

Privet Alexander,
Ah an image with a sound red dominant, how nice :-)
The overall atmosphere is quite dark but somehow it makes those dark red on the house glow in a particular way, and I like this.
Have a nice sunday JY

Ciao Alexander,

interesting and exhaustive note.
well, light was not that well but if you wrote it rains almost every day you were actually lucky to avoid it!
I like those wooden houses and their colours, so vivid, maybe to contrast with the grey weather and gloomy light

I thought that was my method of drawing attention to something apparently insignificant in the photo by using it in the title!
Regardless, this is a fine shot of the waterfront with such colourful buildings and imposing rocky mountains behind. Bergen is a town that has a special memory for me as it was there that I paid with a credit card (we still used travellers' cheques mostly) for a huge Chinese meal (in the only restaurant we could find open while waiting for a train) with with friends in 1983. Our cash had run out, the banks were closed, and all we had in our pockets were train tickets to Narvik. For many years after that we got together and had a 'Bergen dinner' on the night of the anniversary of the occasion. But what does that have to do with the photo?
In overcast conditions you obtained a nice light on the colours, and a swirling cloud formation. The gulls are well placed in the corner and, of course, do make for a good title!
Regards,
Andrew

Hallo Alexander,
Prachtige, maar een klein beetje donkere, kleuren onder een heel mooie hemel. Het is niet gemakkelijk een beeld ter gelijker tijd op de hemmel en de grond in te stellen.
Groeten

Hello Alexander,
Very nice composition with a strong atmosphere.
The colorful houses and boats are enlighted by a shy ray of sun, forming a nice foreground in front of these austere and dark cliffs and I like the heavy contrast between these 2 parts.
Have a nice evening.
Best regards, Christian

i always like those dark red nordic cottages... the weather is not the best but the place looks so peaceful... wish i was there right now as it is so hot here today... beautiful postcard alexander... my compliments...

hello Alexander,
yes, I can see both the seagulls AND the rain, even though there's a little patch of blue sky still visible, somehow the colours look as if just washed by a downpour and ready for more :) I like a lot how the buildings and the boats cluster together, the buzy layer they create works well to create a contrast with the water below and sky above. excellent observation and captivating shot.

with best regards,
Kristine

Hello Alexander
The luminosity is very special and allows to see nicely the wooden/colored houses; I like the contrast between the colorful facades and the dark mountain, the water texture and the two birds which are a nice detail.
Cheers

the image is sharp with nice colour and details
many thanks for the sharing

Tony

Hi Alexsander,
Lovely Bryggen, good light on colourful houses, good frame with these two seagulls.

salut alex
Well-known POV of these frontages out of typical wooden of this city, contrast is very extremely, and the colors are a little dark, but an image pleasant to look at
gilbert

Excellent light, pretty view, but some parts are too dark, I think the workshop previously posted overdid the brightening, so I will add a medium version.

Hello Alexander,

I have noticed this and I was pretty sure I'd made my comment...
The difficult exposure with the white houses is well handled even if the rest has to be a tad dark, sharp fine details in this row of former warehouses...
I like the strong diagonal in the composition!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Alexander,
the light conditions do not refelct the perfectness that you got in your composition and balancing the colors as well as the contrast. Nevertheless the photograph got to be very good and I love to see the contrast between all the red houses and the single yellow boat on the pier.
Peter
