Photographer’s Note
Hegge stave church (Hegge stavkyrkje) is an early 13th century stave church in Hegge, a village in Øystre Slidre municipality in Valdres, Norway.
The first recorded reference to the church is from 1327. Dendrochronological dating of some of the logs in the church, however, indicates that the church was built around 1216.
It is a basilica type church with 8 free-standing interior columns forming an arcade, surrounding a central area with a raised roof. The altar-piece was carved by a local artist in 1780. A runic inscription on the church reads: Erling Arnson wrote these runes.
You can also look at a video from the interior here.

An impressive presentation.
IMO the shadow in the foreground is a little bit distracting. Nevertheless amazing photo.

Hello Gunnar.
What fine subjects these stave churches make, especially when pictured against such a beautiful sky. The succession of steeply pointed gables, topped off by a sharp spire, gives a truly 3-dimensional effect. This church has a very homely looking window with curtains at the near end too.
The scatter of gravestones in the green grass makes a fine foreground, and the way the slope of the hillside makes a right angle to the roof is a powerful element in the composition. The placing of the church within the image makes good use of the rule of thirds.
The solid blocks of bright, but not oversaturated colour - red, blue and green – combine to make a very satisfying photograph.
Kind regards,
Peter.

Hej Gunnar,
So you actually had nice weather at least once in Norway. Sometimes a bit of sunshine and blue sky helps to make a place look better. This one looks great, and you have shot the church from a good angle with the irregularlu shaped gravestones nicely scattered around the lawn. I have a feeling that hillside is very very steep when you get near it.
Very good colours and sharpness.

Gert

Gunnar,
I really like these Norwegian churches with their simple yet elegant construction. The angle of the shot is great giving the scene depth and direction. The inclusion of the grave stones adds points of interest through out the foreground. The lighting and colors are fine with nice sharpness and detail.

Hello Gunnar,
A wooden church as a lot churches in your country.
It's wonderful the cemetery open around the church, totally other than here in Belgium.
Also perspective and depth are lovely.
Compositon and colours are superb.
Very elegant for look at.
Nice done, TFS.

John.

Hej Gunnar,
I appreciate your choice of composition for this photo :) even though I don't ever like graves in the churchyard... but that's part of the church which, in itself, is an interesting "simple" beauty!
I like the beautiful surroundings; and the sky with those very light scattered clouds looks fantastic.
Kind regards,
Elena

Hello, Gunnar.
Another amazingly sharp, crisp, clear and well saturated (though not overly) picture of another stave church. I rather like these buildings and the apparent simplicity of their construction - I should love to visit some. Your inclusion of a link to some video footage is very interesting too.
Curiously, each time that I look at this picture, I seem to see a distinct lean to the left. So much so that I copied the picture and put it in Photoshop. No, I was wrong - it is quite straight, though the near window in the gable end appears not quite straight. It is very strange: the distant parts of the building seem perfectly straight whilst the parts nearest to the camera look as though they are leaning very slightly to the left. I can't quite work out why that is so, but it makes the picture all the more interesting and intriguing!
A very fine picture indeed!
Kind Regards,
John.

Another fine hillside photo where the clear air makes the building look like a child's toy. The steep, steep roofs of these churches (presumably to shed snow) make them very photogenic.
