"Gardisten", the guardsman.
This statue is located at His Majesty the Kings Guard (HMKG) compound at Huseby, Oslo.
I was this weekend attending a Kobudo swordfighting seminar in Oslo and I found out just a few days before travelling that there was an open day at the HMKG compound. Being an ex-guardsman myself I felt the urge to "drop by" and see if I could meet any old friends and superiors.
It turned out that I did...
Anywho...
This statue was raised at this location just after WW2, at was was then the barracs of the German occupying forces. Later the compound was taken over by HMKG, and further taken down and rebuilt in the mid eighties. The compound is in use to this day and has a high standard as a military camp.
The reason for this statue here is that in the early hours of April 9th 1940, Norway was invaded by the forces of Nazi Germany.
Their plan was to take Oslo quickly and thereby capture The King (King Haakon the 7th) and his family. Luckily for us and The King, they weren't 100% successful.
The King and his family managed to escape further inland, and with them was His Majesty the Kings Guard.
In the early hours of one of the following days, the invading German forces attemted to seize The King at a place called Elverum.
What they didn't expect were the soldiers of the 4th Guard company that had fortified themselves at a place called Midtskogen.
The battle was fierce, the brave Guardsmen were forced to fall back, but The King eventually managed to escape.
Some days later, those same soldiers of the 4th Guard company and other members of HMGK fought a big battle at Lundehøgda south of Lillehammer.
Eventually the battles slowed the invading germans enough to allow King Haakon and his family to escape to England, where he continued to rule the country in excile.
All in all HMGK lost some 40 men in the battles they fought to protect their King.
This statue was raised in honor of those who gave their lives to protect the king.
To this day, HMKG is the only operative norwegian military unit that has seen action in war.
And to this day and into the future they will continue to do their active duty to protect their (Our) King.
I am proud to say I am one of those who has served my duty as a Kings guardsman, a "Gardist"
Photo was taken with my mobile phone, a SonyEricsson W800i, so quality is proparbly not the best.
