[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This is my posting #300 on TE and it is also one of my oldest pictures with a "real" camera.

I was 18 years old and on my way to my first summer job abroad, in Manchester, England, with the ICI Dyestuffs Division. where I also took this picture.

In those days you could go by ship from Oslo to Newcastle with the Fred Olsen Line. The ship was either the Blenheim or the Braemar, I don´t remember which one it was.

I had recieved this camera in May, I think it was for passing my examination of marticulation, and I took a lot of photos.

This is of course the Royal Castle of Oslo, as seen from the main street, Karl Johans Gate.

Now you can also look at the workshop, to see the same scene 48 years later, as it looked this weekend, when we were in Oslo to celebrate our grandson, who had his 6th birthday.

Not much have changed in those 48 years, the castle is the same and the lampposts are the same, but I have a feeling that the pavement to the right has been widened, I could not really find the exact spot where I took this first picture.

Hej Gunnar,
I do like your workshop, it makes your older photo so much more of interest, to se whats happens in times. good TE spirit.
Anders

Hello Gunnar,
I think I prefer the older black and white version; it has a more tranquil atmosphere to it in my mind. I like the point of view here and the feeling of quiet animation; the soldier running across the road is a definite bonus. Interesting to see the old cars and the relative lack of traffic. A pleasing range of tones. Congratulations on your 300th!

Hello, Gunnar.

What a fabulous picture from your archives! A wonderful street scene from nearly 50 years ago. Of course, I believe that Norway always drove their cars on the right - didn't Sweden change over to the right in the 1960's?

It is great to have a comparison shot to compare - as you say, not a great deal has changed!

Congratulations on your 300th. posting - I've just managed to stagger to 100!

Best Wishes,

John.

Hello Gunnar,

Congratulations on your 300th posting!

It’s always very interesting to compare old photos with their present day equivalent, taken from the same viewpoint.

Your picture is fine and sharp – what camera did you have then?

I still have an old Zeiss Contina I bought in 1956 – it still works, which is more than I can say of several others that I’ve had since. I must get it out and try a few shots with it.

I have got loads of old BW negatives stashed away some where – I must look through them out and see what I’ve got. They are mostly of family, but there must be some of buildings and general scenes.

Regards,

Peter.

Hallo Gunnar!
I walked along this street in 1998... you give me nice holiday memories. Old photos always are interesting because they mostly caught decisive moments for the photographer. A very interesting one ... especially in combination with the ws picture.
Greetings from springlike Westphalia!

Hej Gunnar,
Intressant bild, verkligen något för historiker. Det är inte ofta man får en sådan här fin inblick i forntiden. Bra att nutiden finns med som jämförelse.
Grattis till 300!
Hälsningar

Hej Gunnar.
Great comparison material between old and new. Really interesting. I like that they have kept the lamp posts. About widening the pavement, I think you're right. They seem to have 'stolen' one lane of the street and added it to the pavement.
Congrats to the 300th.
As always; interesting notes.

Best regards
Per
