The Valley of My Childhood [9]

I was thirteen when I left Gauldalen behind, after living there since I was born… In this series it is my aim to show the diversity and daily life in this area, during all seasons of the year.

My point of view here is around 150 m above the river, at the most narrow part of Gauldalen. The place is located around 45 km from the river mouth, near the village Støren. Here is only room for the river that is quite narrow too, but they made space for the railroad while the highway passes in a tunnel.

From September 1345 there are records of a huge landslide at this exact spot where I stand, creating a more than 40 m high dam that in turn resulted in a 14 km long lake filling the valley above.

As it turned out this was a double disaster, first the new lake flooded many farms. But after some time the dam of course broke down and created another tragedy down the valley, where they say 50 farms and seven churches were destroyed and more than 500 people killed by the wave from the breaking dam. Many foreigners were among the casualties, as more than 200 pilgrims on the way to Nidaros (now Trondheim) drowned as well.

This tragedy has later been named the worst nature disaster in Norway ever.

Name in Norwegian: Kvasshyllraset

------

Gauldalen is the main valley in the central part of Norway, located in the county of Sør-Trøndelag. The latitude for area is around 64, which is the same as in the middle of Alaska. However, the climate is better than Alaska thanks to an ocean current bringing warm water and more pleasant temperatures across the Atlantic from the Caribbean.

Hi Pablo, splendid view of wonderful place, great light and fantastic colors, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Pablo,

Very interesting, if very sad notes!

This is like an artist's canvas.
It has lovely layers of colour sweeping across the shot!
The river is definitely the focal point to draw the eye in and is assisted by the smallpatch of peachy orange of a field surface.
Superb composition!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Pablo,

A very beautiful sight on this valley, I like much contrasts of colors between the foreground and the green one of the mountain. Good management of the lights. Thank you for the interesting historical note on the place but really tragic.

I just quit GoogleEarth because I wanted a larger view of this land slide that caused such sad events. Unfortunately, over that area thier définition is not adequate. But I saw that you arrived on premises from Svartoya highway!!
Anyway this valley is well framed here by the slanted mountain top, the gold at foreground and, of course, those "three" at right!!
Best regards.

Hello Pablo. Interesting note on how man interfere with nature's cause. I like the view with strong contrasting foreground color overlooking the river. The backdrop mountain is well kept but I was just wondering if the slope has been terraced too. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni

Olá Pablo, I like the sense of "furry" here. I can almost feel the fluffy vegetation under the touch of my hands... ;-) Beautiful view with warm colors. Nice contrast bettween the brownish FG and green BG with the river sight in bettween. It could be a summer scene but it must be quite cold, even if not so cold as in Alaska.

Hola Pablo!

I Like the diagonals that draw up hills with the contrast between the reddish tones, green and blue that marks to the first plane, mountains, and the sky.
The river helps us to center the wiev in a point of the photo later to be able to observe it in detail.

Hej Pablo my friend!
It's actually hard exact to tell if the image is in autumn or at the spring. the water has a cold blue that really sets the latitude. very interesting note about the disaster, that remind about one one the other side of the border when a
Man called Magnus Huss tryed to build a chanal 1796 for the timber in the Indalsälven and everything went wrong and emptied the big lake of Ragunda in 4 houres and a lot of people got killed down streams.

Hei Pablo,

Congratulations to your 200th post. I guess that there are very few TE Members with such a massive number of smileys for 200 pictures if any. Wonderful spring picture even if the colours make you wonder if it is autumn. Really well composed and a great POV. Your sort of feel for having a closer look what is behind the nearest mountainside to the left. TFS and have a nice Sunday evening!

Cheers,

Ulf

The colors are more muted here (except for the river in the valley below) but the rust brown is pleasant to see. I believe 500 people dying in the 13th century was a big catatrophe, since people are still remembering about it nowadays...

All the best,

Emmanuel

Hi Pablo,
I like the curving edge-line of the red branches against the blue curve of the river. The diagonal line of the hills is nicely balanced by the trio of trees. Fascinating note, it reminds us that natural disasters have always been around.
HLJ, Pat

Hi Pablo, this is a very good vantage point looking into this tight river valley. The early spring colours have established a good transition from the browns from the front deciduous trees to the green conifers in the back of your picture. The positioning of the river with it's curve to the right fits well in this setting. The shot is very clear and sharp throughout. Very well done.

Thanks, John

Hi, Pablo. There is a good contrast between the trees in the foreground and the spruce trees in the background. The bend of the river is clearly visible and the water colour also contrasts well with the clours on the slopes.
Best wishes,
Philippe

Hi Pablo, you were lucky to grow up in such a beautiful place, even it you did have to leave it behind.
