Kazimierz Dolny, in spite of being a really tiny town is a very popular tourist attraction. You can judge that even by the number of photographs uploaded with this town to TE gallery. Yet not many shots seem to present the ruins of the castle which rises above the old town. The castle was build around 1340 by Polish King Casimir III the Great (Kazimierz Wielki, hence the name of this town). Legend says that there exists an underground passage between this castle and castle in Bochotnica, this passage served the king to visit secretly his Jewish mistress Esterka. I have found web pages where you can read about the history of this castle (here or here) but only in Polish :) You can also find there some pictures which present the castle as it looked like before it was destroyed.

Kazimierz Dolny (Yiddish: קאזמיר Kuzmir) is a small town in eastern Poland, on the right (eastern) bank of the Vistula river in Puławy County, Lublin Province. It is a considerable tourist attraction as one of the most beautifully situated little towns in Poland. It enjoyed its greatest prosperity in the 16th and the first half of the 17th century, due to the trade in grain conducted along the Vistula. It became an economic backwater after that trade declined, and this freeze in economic development enabled the town to preserve its Renaissance urban plan and appearance. Since the 19th century it has become a popular holiday destination, attracting artists and summer residents.
